when people say that all immigrants MUST assimilate, isn't that like telling them what to do?
america is the land of the free. that's why we made it, to be free and also be free of a controling nation
when i hear people say that immigrants MUST assimilate, i think, "well, you could at least say something like 'in my opinion, immigrants should give an effort to assimilate"
i hope you all understand what i'm saying. i understand why you want them to assimilate, but when you demand it as if its an order, it comes off as rude or controling. it defies america itself.

I think you are right with regard to legal immigrants. I think they SHOULD assimilate, but don't think they MUST assimilate.
With regard to illegals however, if one problem with excess, illegal immigration is the impact on our own indigenous culture, we have every right to condition any legalization we may give on basic assimilation steps, such as learning English.
Do you see the difference? They ask for us to do something very expensive in legalizing them. We have a right to make sure there is something in it for us, if we decide to grant the request.

Theyre DEFIANTLY OVERWHELMING Our Nation
In Addition To The 21 Million Mexican Immigrants
There Are Nearly 20 Million ILLEGAL Mexicanos
And They Are (All Together Now) NOT ASSIMILATING
Our Culture As AMERICAN CITIZENS Is DIVERSITY
Diversity Of Skin Colors
Diversity Of Languages
Diversity Of Religions
Music
Dance
Foods
Fashions
What Other Nation In The World
Can Be As Proud Of Diversity As The USA??
What Other Nation In The World
Can Celebrate As Many Holidays As The USA??
Why Should We Succomb To Being Overrun
By A Predominantly HISPANIC CULTURE
Specifically MEXICAN??
We Are Fighting To Maintain Our Diversity
As We DO NOT Wish To Become
A Predominantly Hispanic Nation
We LOVE Our Diversity
Immigration Laws Are In Place (Among OTHER Reasons)
--To REGULATE The Flow Of Immigrants
From ALL Nations
--To PREVENT Too Many Immigrants From One Nation
And TOO FEW Immigrants From Others
--To ENSURE The ASSIMILATION Of Newcomers
Into OUR DIVERSE SOCIETY Of Cultures
--To MAINTAIN The BALANCE Of DIVERSITY
We Want To Welcome People From Mexico
But We DONT Want To Turn Into Mexico
We Want The Mexican People
To Assimilate Into AMERICANS
Mexicans / Latinos / Hispanics
Need To Become As DIVERSE
As ALL OTHER AMERICANS
Just Like The Millions Of
Italians, Irish, Germans, Etc.
Did Before And Still Do Every Year
Get It ??
Defiance Is Not Assimilation
Neither Is DEMANDING That WE Assimilate To YOU
The Latin American Invasion Is THREATENING
The BALANCE Of Diversity In Our Nation
WE THE PEOPLE Will NOT Be Threatened In Any Way
So........
LOVE It Or LEAVE It
Get It??

Assimilation is a complicated matter. When immigrants move into an area in mass numbers, assimilation takes much longer. This is because they have many others around to keep speaking their native language and have little interaction with anyone outside of their group. (This by the way is a proven fact I just read a few days ago).
Anyone who says they must assimilate should then volunteer to teach English to folks in adult education classes at night. And yes, you cannot demand that. I think there are a lot of idiots out there who don't have the facts and are flying on their prejudices. Too bad they can't look at their own families and go back to when they entered this country. They may be surprised about their own family history and how many of their ancestors were treated badly and some even entered illegally. A term, 'without papers' was something that was given to people who came without proper documentation to Ellis Island.

Well, assimilation cannot be controlled for the most part. As time pass by, the smaller areas of difference will begin to disappear, like the accent and pronunciation of words. Some aspects, though, would not change. Although it is not possible to assimilate a person forcefully (since it won't be a voluntary phenomena), it is possible for a person to assimilate under the perception of peer pressure. I don't think U.S forces anyone to assimilate. Being a citizen or supporting the President is not assimilation, but a way to assimilation.
Hope this helped.

I think pepole use the word assimilate as a polite way of saying obeying the laws and customs of a Nation. We are one nation that should not be devided. We share a common language and costoms that bind us together because we are a nation of many peopole that come from many places but our ability to communicate and work Together has made us great.

You know the saying "When in Rome"? Why come to America in the first place, you know? If I moved to Morocco or India, do you think I would expect them to change their creed for me? There is an American creed, and there are defining characteristics. U want to be on the outside looking in, or u want to be a part of what continues to make this country a decent place to live. I wont say a great place to live anymore, because we have a miserable president who has gotten us into a sad state of affairs, and this whole conservative/borderline fascist mentality that accompanies our Dear Leader Who Can Do No Wrong is a frightening phenomenon. Cripes. Im gonna move to Spain....

Only rednecks and conservatives want everyone to assimilate-then get mad when we all don't assimilate into tight a$$e$ that don't believe in saving every fetus and killing every criminal.
People fear what they don't understand. Try being a southern baptist that has never left the turnip farm and meeting an Indian Buddhist. Because they don't understand not only the differences, but the similarities-they hide behind a scripture that they shape to fit any situation to make themselves look right and righteous-and start condemning
In short it is not a matter of control, more a matter of rejecting what they don't understand

I lived in London for a year, I assimilated to their culture. It was MY choice to be there, what right would I have to expect them to change a damn thing for me? It is the immigrants choice to come here, there ARE certain things they should assimilate to! It isn't "telling them what to do".

nicely positioned. What replaced into put in the form replaced into the desire to circumvent having gov't shove faith down voters throats. Christian Fundamentalists choose to revert, and void the Constitutional separation of Church and State. the concern is having Christians be much less fascinated interior the form than pushing their faith. it would be greater clever to ask somebody from each and each faith to declare a prayer, so all could be tolerant.
