It is written backwards so you can know that it is an ambulance. But it is also written so you know that it is an EMS vehicle, as opposed to a police or fire vehicle. For example, if you see ambulance in your mirror you know that you are not in trouble, but if it says police, you may have a problem. Sirines tend to startle people, so it helps ease peoples nerves to know that they aren't being pulled over.

Remember to pull to the right and stop...makes my job easier.

A patient must be taken to the hospital immediately. So if it was written in a reverse way the automobile drivers who block the way of the ambulance could see the word "AMBULANCE" in their plane mirror attached to their automobiles and can leave way to the ambulance for the sake of heavens.

If you look in your rear view mirror when an ambulance is coming, it will read ambulance the correct way. If it was correct on the ambulance and you looked in your mirrir, it would look backwards. Its so you can read it by looking in a mirror.

Because if you look in a mirror and see it, you can actually read it. Looking at it straight on and the letters being backwards is easier to tell what it is. If it were spelled the right way, seeing it an a mirror (rear view) would take a few seconds to tell what it is.
