there are all kinds of reasons people cut...some may cut to realese the anger...pain...frusteration cause they dont wanna cry...
some cut because they wanna feel..to make sure they are still alive..like reality check...others cut because the emotional pain is too much, so they cut to feel physical pain which takes away from the emotional pain for few mins..and some cut to see the blood cause it brigs them calmess...and others cause they feel they should be punished...and some are just attention seekers.

There are many reasons to why people cut themselves:
1) Some people are looking for attention.
2) Some people feel so much emotional/mental pain that they cut themselves in order to convert it into physical pain because it is easier to deal with.
3) Some people feel like they deserve it.
4) Some people go numb and they don't even recognize what they are doing.
5) Some people now feel the need to cut themselves based on "peer pressure".
There are numerous amounts of reasons, and usually it is more then one of them.

People harm themselves because their coping resources outweigh their ability to cope with stressors. I know from personal experience that even though there is no magical "I feel better" after cutting - there is a sense of......getting back at the things that cause me to feel depressed. 5 years later, I still have the scars - and I sometimes have trouble admitting to the fact that I actually did that - but with proper help, I'm no longer depressed. People cut themselves because they dont know what to do - they can be depressed or manic, but they dont know how to relieve the strong feelings they harbor in a safe manner so they do it in an unsafe manner.

I do it as a release of inner emotional pain. I do feel it as I do it but it feels better than what I'm feeling emotionally. Sometimes, depending on the amount of blood, I am able to forget my problems for a short time (though I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else). Also, sometimes, I use it as a release to prevent any action that I might take when I get the urge to commit suicide, which, recently, is often.
I find, talking to other "cutters", that the "secret shame" I feel after I have done it is not unusual. Most, but not all, of the people I know feel the same way.
This is just my reason, other people have theirs. Hope this satisfies your curiosity.

Here is an example, you are in pain, say you pulled a muscle in your back and it hurts so bad you want to cry because it feels like it is killing you. Your back is all you can think about, the pain is so terrible you are trying to decide whether to take a pain pill or call an ambulance, you go into your kitchen to get the phone to call 911 somehow you end up puting your hand down on a red hot burner on the stove. How do you feel. What do you feel? Most likely it is not you back. Most likely it is the pain in your hand. Our skin feels pain first. As far as I know there is a order in which our brain feels pain. The skin being number one.

I can't honestly answer for everyone but I myself used to be addicted to self mutilation for 4 years. Doctors say its because I have what is called borderline personality disorder in which self mutilation is one of the many symptoms. But I disagree. While it may be a symptom I do not believe that is WHY I did it. My reasoning was, when things were bad and out of my control I would cut and I would be numb for a while. My mind would focus on the pain on my wrists or legs instead of the pain inside. It was simply a release of stress.

Because the pain on the inside is too unbearable so the cutting separates you from it. It's like you escape for a few moments. People also feel as if they deserse it, like they need to be punished...they feel guilt and shame. It is very common with people that have been abused...but not always, and it does require treatment.

i used to cut myself, i was depressed and i didnt like expressing my feelings to anyone, not even close friends, i could look fine and act normal around them, and go home and cut, i was very good at hiding the way i felt nd bottling it all up inside, which was not good. It was at first becasue i was stressed from all the things going on, then after awhile just the thought that i actualli did cut, made me even more depressed and it becomes like an addiction, like people who smoke, you know it can kill you, but you keep on doing it

It's a way of release. Have you ever felt overwhelmed, depressed or just helpless? When one cuts, it releases those feelings that before they didn't know what to do with. Some people do it with food. It just calms you. That's the way I felt as a teenager anyway.

I cut myself when I was a teenager and my family was going through a divorce and all kinds of other stuff. My whole life felt out of my control. I did it because It was pain that I controlled. In a sick way it made sense then.
