When I was in high school, I practiced an hour a day. I warmed up with a string crossing exercise and then scales. Then I would practice Sevcek double stops. After that I would practice my orchestra music and then whatever solo my teacher had me working on.
Now I am a teacher. I have a list of warmups that I have my students do at the beginning of their practice. Then I have them them practice skills such as trills, tremelo, left-hand pizz and harmonics. For advanced students, I have them add vibrato and 3rd positon to that list. They spend about 5 to 10 minutes on the warm-ups.
Then they practice whatever I've assigned in their method book, in Suzuki, anything extra I've given them and their school music. If the student is advanced, I expect them to practice 1 hr a day, at least 3 to 4 days per week. This summer, I challenged my students with a contest to see who practices the most minutes, the most days, and who will practice more than the teacher (myself.) The winners get prizes. The contest goes for a month at a time. Last month, the winner practiced for over 1,500 minutes! All my students have been practicing more since we started the contest. They are all making big improvements!
As for myself, I am not practicing now as much as I'd like to. I am used to practicing about 11 pm at night but my boyfriend is worried about the upstairs neighbors since we live in a triplex. I figure I will keep practicing until someone complains. I hate the sound with a practice mute. I mostly practice on breaks between students when I am working at the music store 3 days a week.
My orchestra season starts again next month and then I will start practicing about five days a week as the director is presenting us with more and more challenging music each year so I have to continue to improve.

Well I play both the piano and violin, but I'm only a beginner in violin. I can give you some advice on my piano work though. Everyday I practice the scales about three times each for every scale, then I work on an intermediate level piece for sight-reading, then when I feel like I've trained my eyes for harder work, I move on to sheets of music I want to play. Normally I'd say to practice for 1-2 hours with breaks inbetween, you do not want your butt stuck to the chair (if you're sitting, if your standing, well you might get tired after awhile). I try to wash my face before I practice so that I don't get tired (I practice not long after I get up). Don't over-perfect your pieces, they'll wind up in the dump, or at least that's how it is with me. I practice until it's perfect, then I keep practicing and it winds up really bad and off.

i try to practice for at least an hour a day, but that's obviously not always possible... other times i end up playing for 3 hours!! usually i start with scales or some light sight reading to warm up, then move systematically through pieces and the like being really really picky about intonation by playing things an octave lower and listening very carefully to all the intervals. i don't really think about vibrato much anymore, and haven't done excersises for a while.. my teacher's crazy on scales so i practice them for about 1/4 of the time (i get fed up quite easily.. haha)

Hi.....I still practice a minimum of one hour each and every day, more as time allows......I have played for over 20 years.....in the very beginning, I found bowing and vibrato to be the most important exercises, and still do.....I try to learn at least one new piece, and commit that to memory, rather than playing from sheet music......learning and perfecting is always a part of practice and playing...... :)

I try to play a few scales, get frustrated, throw the violin on the floor, jump and down on it, pick up the pieces, throw them in the trash, turn on the computer and go to Yahoo Answers.
