Opal--in fact, it's considered unlucky for anyone to wear opals if they aren't born in October. There are two types--Australian opals and Mexican opals.

Australian opals are the kind you think of traditionally--milky with colored highlights. They are only polished, not faceted, because they're such a soft stone (it's also recommended that you not wear one all the time, because you might break it).

Mexican opals are clear stones which range anywhere from red to yellow. They can be facet-cut, and I think they are somewhat harder. Both types are referred to as fire opals, depending on who you're talking to.
