the picture may get some greenish cast to it where the magnets were closest. this can happen if you put stereo speakers too close. ( they have magnets) it will go away if you remove the magnet and turn the tv off for a day or so.
this happened to my TV and I sold it cheap before i learned it.

ok way to many myths on this page.... yes myths... the only effect the magnets will have on the tv screen yes is discoloration and so on... which can be reversed quite easily with a "degauser" which is basically a wire loop that creates a magnetic feild using 110 usaully this field is different form your magnets though because it rotates allowing it to in effect removed the negative effects of the magnets....
Now then if you place the magnets near the actaul transformer on the tv you could potentailly damage the tvs power source... there is a fuse that would stop any damaging current from making the tv "explode" though the tv would lose power and you would have to contact a tv repairman to replace the fuse and any damaged components... if you placed the magnets near the power cord it would probably create a resistance on the power to the tv and the tv might lose power and turn off.. power would return when you removed the magnets...
The tv has protection against the magnets inside its box you should be able to hurt the tv unless you opened the tv case and stuck the magnets inside...
Now then the computer... yes it is pretty much safe inside the case... same thing you would have to open the case and stick the magnets inside and at worst you would erase the system bios... which in effect the computer would no longer go through the start up process which is the bios... ie you would need a new motherboard... if you stuck the magnets directly on a floppy disk you might erase the data store on them... so dont open the computer case and stick magnets on the motherboard...
It would take an industrial strength magnet to do damage to the computer from outside the case...
yes you can inerfere with the signal to the monitor quite easliy if the magnets are to close to the moniter cable... in fact if you run the monitor cable to close to your computers power cord the power cord can create enough magnetic inerference to disrupt the signal...

Any questions??

A computer uses magnetic storage, in which information is encoded as a series of magnetic bands on a disk.
Our Magneto could interfere with TVs and computers at two levels. Because it is electric and plugged in, the exchange of electricity would make the TV or the computer explode or short circuit. The second level that concerns all three (including mobile phones), the magnetic field created by this constant exchange of ions could interfere with the radio-waves that the phone and the TV are using. The magnetic field could also interfere with the frequency at which the computer monitor is broadcasting its images and you would see the monitor screen flicker. Note that the mobile phones would not explode or short circuit as they are not connected to any electrical source. At the very least the character would interfere with the radio-waves, so the reception of a signal. If really necessary the mobile phone could overheat and melt (the radio-waves would have then reach the frequency used by microwaves oven and the cell phones would become small microwaves, which is at the center of the debate right now about if cell phones are safe or not for the people).

O.K. I hope this helps you a bit.
In other words computers an T.V's have tiny magnets in it and it is not good with a powerful magnet around.

each TV has a magnet around the outside of the picture tube
that powers up at the start of the TV being turnned on this dis-charges all static electritity and sometimes when the tv set has color splots all over the screen just the usece of a magnet to the screen in a circlur pattern on the screen sometimes helps
I have done this a ton of time at ri-rivers back in 1979 to 1983

Sometimes we use magnets to fix picture problems on a TV. There are powerfull magnets in all the speakers in your house including the TV and the computer.

If you have floppy disks, bank cards, or any kind of volatile memory (USB) drives, you should keep them away from magnets though.

They would have to be really big magnets to wipe your hard drive or to effect your computers components. They are all sheilded quite well so the speakers and such people keep around their computers and tv's don't muck things up.

I have heard of big speakers being left next to a tv for long periods of time having a negative effect but I haven't seen it myself.

If you have discoloured the TV(because of a magnet) it can be degaussed. I used to work in TV repair. It can be fixed. Call a TV repairman or go to FRY'S Electronics and buy a degausser.

are they those rattlesnake magnets? if so, then if you put that close to a tv or computer the screen will display a rainbow of different colours if places for a second of two. my friend shown me this and he said if it stay any longer it will ruin the screen.

Well it does matter how powerful they are, but they would probaly fry or completly erase the hard drive.
