By asking what is the "purpose" of man, you implicitly assume that something -- call it "GOD" -- created us with a purpose. Somebody else answered "to worship GOD". I think that is silly. If a supernatural being with enough power to create the universe did create the universe, I really doubt it would create us soley to appease its vanity. That is such a petty thing.
If you must assume that we were created, and that our creator had a purpose for us, then I would prefer to think the creator just takes joy in creation and watching the diversity of creation unfold. I have a 16 month old daughter, and I love watching her learn and grow. I don't expect her to worship me. If there is a "GOD", then I think its purpose in creating us would be just to enjoy seeing us (and all other living beings throughout the universe) evolve and learn about ourselves and the universe.

God created man to take care of the earth. Thats why he gave us intellect so we can govern other species of animals and improve the earth with our own creations.
But he also gave us emotions and freedom, which drives the use of intellect into a negative way. Instead of using intellect for the benefit of everyone.. We are using our intellect for the benefit of ourselves... We feel, we envy, we feel jelouse.
That emotion drove man to eat the forbidden fruit. We wanted power and we wanted more!
The purpose of man changed. Instead of helping each other and protecting the earth. We now, kill each other and destroy the earth. Im sure that in the end.. the thing that will lead to the earth's destruction is mankind.

each thing has a purpose? what's the point of the rock that my lawnmower hit the different day? there is not any rationalization why each thing must have a purpose. human beings will create their personal applications. no longer of all of those will coincide. some human beings will bypass their personal course and others will band at the same time. some communities might want to have applications that oppose one yet another. it truly is nature.

That's a question that every man on earth seeks to find. Some answer it through religion, as I do, some think in completely realistic terms absent of faith, others incorporate scientific factors, as I also do, and others would indulge themselves in the pleasures of this world in hopes of abandoning our imminent fear of death and dying.
Personally, I feel that the purpose of man on earth is for us to experience life as something of a trial for the glories of what is to come after death, whatever that may be. God is in my explanation, but what I think all of us can agree upon is that time here is short, and we must seek peace and content in this world while we still have the opportunity. Enjoy life, but do not use it as an excuse to ruin the enjoyment of another. Be moral. Guide your life in the name of a righteous cause.

To do God's will in his/her own life. If you want to know what that will/direstion/purpose is, then spend some time waiting on Him.
Isa 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
This is the only way you will find his perfect will for your life.
Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
His purpose is our purpose. Bless you.

These other ideas are novel, but this question has a right & wrong answer - the purpose of man is to glorify God. That's why He created us.

Konnichiwa...The first answer is pretty good...but let me add this...
No mater who we are just do our best to love our creator, man, animals and the other creations like the trees, flowers, look at the majestic Mt's. the sun sets the sun rises
and look at the beauty of the opposite sex. Can you imagine how beautiful Eve or if you are a woman, the man Adam?
To do our best in doing what our creator put into our natural inner being...LOVE.
Remember we were created to live forever, but our fore father messed up. So the purpose of man is TRY YOUR BEST to please our creator. because we all fall far short in pleasing him.

In the simple terms that we, as humans, can appreciate:
"...of making books there is no end and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter. Fear God and keep his commandments: for this is the whole man" (Ecclesiastes 12:12-13).
