Any star is not far at all. Look at any star. You are seeing the light from that star that left many many light years ago. For our purpose here, let us say 45 million light years ago.

But consider this. When the light enters your eye and touches the back of your retina, you and that star are connected by that single & unbroken ray of light. You are touching the star with your eye. For all practical purposes, you are also connected to a day that occurred 45 million years ago. You are timeless.

It kind of makes you think.

To encourage us to find FTL based travels, and to learn how to create and use wormholes and other superscience stuff that's kerbillion years away. That's the only justification I can think up: If we're gonna !@#$ over our planet, we need to get another one, and that's gonna require some way of going really far away. It's not necessarily impossible, just impossible by traveling through three dimensions...

The thought of a road trip with nothing ahead of me but dark blue skies and stars is mighty compelling.

If the stars were closer to us our earth would be too hot to support life. God got everything right when He created the universe.
