We have two large American Labs who were trained from birth to do their business on Pine Chips. We have one of those large plastic kid pools in the basement, and it is wonderful not having "land mines" in the yard. So yes, you can train your dogs to use a litter box - so to speak.

Doglover is on the mark :])
Instead of the litter, which was addressed as a great place to dig, the new puppy "piddle" pads are specifically made to address dog elimination.
It's an awful lot to ask of a puppy to step over the high side of a box, then NOT dig and play in the litter. Plus, since dogs don't naturally try to cover their urine and poo like cats do, litter is really a waste.
If the expense of the dog pads is an issue, buy a half or whole metal sheet pan from restaurant supply and use newspaper in it. The small lip around the edges will help protect your floor, and newspaper is cheap. The pan will last a loooong,t too, time since it's fairly heavy metal.
Best wishes.

Yes, but I like the pads instead of liter.(less mess) It will take patience on your part, but they can learn. Even though the puppy pads say they are treated, meaning having a scent to attract them to pee, my little guy was not attracted to the pad. What I did was when he did pee I dabbed some of his pee onto a pad, so his pee scent would be there. It really didn't take too long for him to get the hand of it. I also put the pads in a liter box instead of just on the floor. And make sure that you pick a spot and keep that spot so he/she knows were to find it. I take my dog outside to pee/poop, but when we go away its nice to know that he has a special place to go if needed.

One reason you can't do that is when dogs see dirt they dig. The litter would be all over the floor and the box overturned. Cats instinctly learn to dig and bury poop. Dogs just dig and poop anywhere. They will only bury something they like, maybe a toy.

you can train it to go to the door and bark or scratch it if it wants to go to the bath room .
a suppose you can train it to go on a box ,our dog lifted its leg over our toilet ,he had seen us do it ,but us kids got the blame for wetting the seat .
is it not easier to teach it to go outside ,in stead of having to clean a horribly smelling box all the time ????
