A reputable breeder really is the way to go if you want a good quality dog. Sometimes if they breed for show, they will have a pet-quality puppy. They may or may not charge you less than they would for a show dog. Breeding dogs isn't cheap. The high price you pay to a breeder isn't a profit to them, its recovery of their costs.
Also, check out your local animal shelter/humane society/SPCA. Many times you can find a wonderful pet there, and pay a fraction of what you would to a breeder. Just be aware, that the dogs there could come from any background. Some may have emotional baggae you will have to deal with. So don't pick the first dog you see. Spend some time with it, and talk to the people who care for it.

The one good thing about a reputable breeder is that they will know their animals ( dogs, cats, horses) like the back of their hands and can tell you the history of the parents, grandparents, etc. I would be VERY LEARY of Pet stores. I personally like to examine the parents to see how they react to me, if you have children, etc. BUT, on the other hand, I have personally have had very good luck with dogs from the pound. While you may not know their history, talk to the people who take care of the dogs every day. They can give you alot of insight into the personality of the animal and the card on the cage will tell you some about the animal. These animals seam to KNOW that when you adopt them that you have saved them from death. They repay you many times over. Be cautious and don't get the first dog you see. Make sure you take your time. Another plus is these animals already have their shots, are fixed, and microchipped. I hope that this is of some help.

don't look at a pet store for a puppy! while they might look like nice pets and may have health papers, 99% of them have underlying health conditions that will end up costing you thousands of dollars in veterinary bills, and may result in premature death of the animal. trust me, my friend worked in a vet clinic that was across the street from a pet store, and every day they would get many, many animals coming in for treatments of health problems that could have been prevented by the dogs and cats being bred responsibly.

actually... breeders are your best option... keep looking around until you find some puppies with reasonable prices.
pet shops are one of the worst places to buy a puppy... my aunt sold her puppy to a pet shop for $50.. and they placed a $500 price tag on him... expensive if you ask me...
OR... if you would like to adopt a pupppy from your local animal shelter... i think they cost about a $100 or more...
hope you find your puppy soon!

in case you purchase the pup on-line sight-unseen then it truly is a nasty position to purchase a pup, era. try going to The Yorkshire Terrier club of u . s . a . of america and contacting them for breeder referral on your section. The breeders that you discover by skill of the club will be obsessed on making wholesome canine and actually care about getting you the suited pup a possibility.

Look for an animal rescue, or at the local SPCA. Many times you can work with them and get a dog for free who really needs a loving home.
