Goldfinches are a type of small perching bird that are usually a mix of bright yellow, Black or Grey. They usually eat fruit, berries, seeds and depending on the species, lots and lots of insects. There's several species around the world, but the ones most common in captivity as pets include The European Goldfinch and sometimes, the American Goldfinch. American Goldfinches are generally available to European Bird owners. The species you described sounds like it may be a European Goldfinch but I won't be 100% sure without a picture or a more detailed description :) .
