California law as a reference:
The vehicle code does not (in most instances) apply to private property. There are a few exception, such as reckless driving, drunk driving, hit and run, fatality,etc.
Crosswalks on private property, such as a supermarket parking lot or shopping mall parking lot, are not covered by the vehicle code, so if an officer were to be called to an accident that happens there, unless there is some aggravated circumstances, he cannot write a citation for an apparent vehicle code violation, as he could if the same event happened at a crosswalk on a public street.
But civil law applies and a wrongdoer or negligent vehicle driver can be sued for damages caused by careless driving.
But the crosswalks are there for a public safety purpose and I'm sure you'll agree that whether the vehicle code can be enforced or not, pedestrians should be given the right of way no matter where they are, and whether they're a little careless in their walking or not. It just makes sense and its the right thing to do.
Traffic control markings in private lots are meant to help and guide people and to asist in preventing accidents and injury. It's only that since it's private property, the customary rules of the road are not as enforceable.

Yes. Even though it's not completely right but a driver has to yield to pedestrians everywhere. not just in crosswalks

As far as I know all states require drivers to yield the right of way to pedestrians no matter where they come into contact with each other.

Yes.
The pedestrian ALWAYS has the right of way. No matter where they are. They could walk out in the middle of traffic on the busiest street in America, and the cars would have to stop. Of course, the pedestrian would have to be insane to do such a thing, but it's the law.

Pedestrians should have enough sense to yeild to vehicles, common sense dictates that it is the pedestrian that will suffer the hurts in the event of a meeting of the two.
I was taught as a child that it is not safe to walk in front of a moving vehicle. What the hell is wrong with todays society???? No common sense is what.

Well, I'd say it's a very good idea to always stop for the pedestrians, since you can get into a heckova lot of trouble if you hit them!!!

yes, pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way at all intersections and all marked crosswalks, although i wouldn't recommend running them over anywhere else

thinkin about goin out and runnin people over? heh heh heh... lol, this reminds me of my friends van, he said they were driving to a restaurant, and a pedestrian was in front of them and the automatic transmission shifted up gears lol!
