Why do some people think it's cool to do drugs? I don't see any joy in them because of how people use them while wallowing in a pit of misery.

I saw a VH-1 special about drugs and rock n' roll and they showed clips of hippies dancing and jumping for joy while high on acid and LSD. Back then, no one knew about the dangers of these drugs. Still, if I want to escape reality, I listen to classical music in my room on my iPod or I'll read a book, work in my crossword puzzle mag or go online. I don't need drugs to escape reality.

I, too, saw the special on VH1.
It was interesting.

The whole idea of a sykidelic journey (or however you spell it) was cool and new back then, so that's maybe a reason why they did so.

It was much like escaping, but the way you escape is a much safer and more lax way of doing so (like listening to music, reading, socializing about issues and problems). Escaping in something is a natural reflex, but to face the issues one has would be exceptionally mature.

When i think of teens doing drugs and why, i think of not only peer pressure to do so because it's a "different experience than reality" and its "awesome", but its to escape as you stated. To derail from problems in reality (whether they be domestic issues, issues at work, or other problems in one's life).

There was also a special on Nightline where women in Iraq would drug themselves during times of war in order to avoid it. This is a very dangerous yet common drug escape in Iraq. The idea of escaping by use of drugs was popularized by men of that country, and was advised to the women.

All and all, no one knew the long term effects (now, methamphetamines) can have on people's bodies and personalities. Its just a really publicized "trial and error" kind of thing.

Hope i answered your question correctly!
:)

Some people learn unhealthy habits to escape from reality, and once they've done it they see how easy and fun it was. They may also gain a physical dependance on the drug, or psychological too. Therefore they are caught in a cycle of using and abusing. Using drugs gives you a feeling that you are not apart of your body or that your body is numb or medicated for the moment. Your mind may also be altered depending on the substance and things may seem better, your problems may go away, and you may enjoy your time.
Usually people grow up after using a while and realize that drugs lead to addiction and other problems along with that. Personality problems like stealing, lying, physical aggression, anxiety, or damage to the organs may occur. Usually this is when people get the clue and stop using. Sometimes though, physical addiction is too much to overcome and people enjoy the high they get. They also have to live life surrendering to an addiction and waste their time, money, and thoughts on it. Not to mention the pain they may cause others.

It all depends on your personality. I was the type that could do drugs all the time and still go to work the next day. I just don't have an addictive personality. LSD is different from any other drug because it's very personal to each individual. It should not be taken by someone prone to depression. I didn't take it to escape reality, I took it to enhance it.

I agree I don't need drugs to escape. I didn't do drugs in high school and I was responsible for a girl who did do them getting caught. Some people just don't understand the dangers and they think it will make them cool to get into this scene. They are just looking for a place to belong.

I did drugs when I was younger, and it was just stupid to do. Boredom, a nonchalant attitude about the repercussions, and overall a stupid thing to do overall. It wasn't an escape of reality, it was a way to deal with it. All the things that hurt, well, they still hurt regardless. I'm lucky that I do not have an addictive personality, but I did have an excessive one. Stay clean if you can, it's good for you and your future, but believe me, in the 70s, they knew it was bad for them too!
