i have an american bulldog and I've been wondering if it was purebred. i would really like to put him in shows.

The only way you can show him in the United States is if both of his parents were registered with the American Kennel Club. Talk to the breeder, but if you were not offered papers when you got the dog his parents were probably not registered.

When purchased a purebred comes with American Kennel Club papers and certificates of lineage. You cannot show a dog without these papers and registration with the AKC. A dog being shown must also be trained for the show ring. There is a protocal to follow. In most instances, it requires a trained handler.

If you did buy him from a breeder, you should be able to get a pedigree from them. Some breeders also tattoo/brand their dogs for their records (identification, who to breed out, females who have been bred, pups to sell, etc.), so you can look for that. However, I bet you would already know if your dog had one of those (look on his gums and under those big jowles). You can also take him to the vet and get a DNA test. However, that is lengthy and expensive so use it as a last resort.

Try letting your dog mate another "purebred dog", If the puppies are different that shows your dog is not purebred.

If you didn't get AKC registration paper FROM the breeder..you have a MUTT/MONGREL!!
Which IS what that "type" IS!!!
