It's easy. You can buy it at Comp USA or Best Buy, or you can buy it online. I recommend crucial.com. Their website will help you figure out what you need, and they send detailed instructions with illustrations with the RAM modules. Remove the side panel of your computer, undo the clips that hold the RAM in place (the old modules will look very similar to the new ones). The new ones will just snap in to the memory slots. When the modules are properly seated, the clips will automatically lock into place. Just make sure that you unplug your computer and use an anti-static wrist strap when you work on it.

SImple.
1) Find out what type of RAM your system requires by visiting the manufacturer's website and searching on your model (or you can read the manual)
Note: There is an option called "dual-channel" that most PC's built in the last 2 years may have in place. Be sure to look for this feature in your manual's memory section to see what memory slots need to be filled for it to stay active.
2) Rip open the case and see if you have any open DIMM slots you have available (again, beware of dual-channel which changes your options).
3) I recommend you go to http://www.newegg.com or http://www.pricewatch.com to make the purchase. Look for brand names like Mushkin, OCZ, Micron, Crucial, Kingston, or Patriot. Stay away from house brands.
All that's left is physically adding the memory yourself, which should be graphically diagramed in your manual.

updating is not necessary, we usually increase the amount of RAM we use. U buy another slot, plug into the other socket for memeory ,that is OK, if u have 256M, u can buy a slot of 256M, and you got 512M. If u only have one socket, then you need to sell your 256M RAM and buy a 512 slot, and plug into the socket.
That's it, pretty simple. But if your socket only support SDRAM,then u would not buy a DDR memory, u need to change your motherboad first.
