It should be looking a healthy pink with some yellow around the edges (that's just adipose tissue, not pus), with no signs of pus, not smelling foul, and definitely no black tissues (that's an indication of necrosis and tissue death, which must be debrided immediately to prevent further tissue degeneration and infection). Remember to keep the area well dressed with the appropriate dressing your vet has given you, ensure the dressing doesn't get wet, and that your cat is getting a well-balanced diet to promote good healing.
Hope your cat gets well soon.

An abcess by definition is an infection that it deep inside the body and not superficial, like on the layers of the skin.
If an abcess has been lanced, drained and treated with antibiotics it will simply "disappear".
Are you one of those "do it yourself" pet owners whose pet has a deep puncture wound from another cat or dog and you are just expecting it to go away without proper treatment? If you are, you are putting your pet's life in danger and don't have much medical knowledge at all.
Thank you Kim for explaining the medical situation. I will try to remember that -- healing from the bottom up and not the top down.

Initially the healing area should look as a pink soft tissue. that is the granulation tissue. The pus of the abcess should dry with the process of healing. The wound shd obviously be kept clean.

After you have cleaned out the abcess, it should start looking better right away. Use Hydrogen Peroxide to boil out any germs for the next few days, and then put neosporin or polysporin on it until it heals.
The wound should turn red, then if it was bleeding should scab over. It should get pinker as it gets better and the scab will dry up. Once the scab falls off the dog will start growing hair back.

My cat had that a few years ago. After a week, the area looked much better; Still kind of red, but like 'new skin'. It healed nicely, but it has never grown fur back in that spot. Your cat might grow fur back, but don't be surprised if it doesn't.

when an abcess is healing it heals from the inside out. if its healing properly it will have no redness alot of dead skin falling off. you pet will heal its self once the wound has been drained. let your pet clean it as much as it once.if its snot healing buy some powder from your local IFA STORE I CANT REMEMBER THE NAME OF IT BUT ITS YELLOW AND IT WONT HARM YOUR PET IF INGESTED FROM LICKING THE WOUND.

i agree with old cat lady. if your cat has an abcess, it needs to be opened and drained. abcesses need to heal from the bottom up, not the top down. please get it to a vet
