I guess common sense dictates that if you are going murder loads of people and take their land, take their wealth, manipulate the laws, and ruin so many peoples lives that dont want so a stupid primitve religion, so one may try and kill you.

Hey! Good question!
We live in a broken world, with some people feeling justified doing violent things. The Pope has a great responsibility and he's a realist. There are people who might think violently toward him for political reasons, because just because they don't like the Catholic Church. We have free will. God wants us to choose to love Him freely. But if we don't, God respects our choices and will never interfere with what we freely choose. If John the Baptist and Jesus were killed, the Pope's certainly not immune. After all someone tried to assassinate the previous Pope, Pope John Paul II.
On the other hand, the Pope is a man of tremendous faith and believes in Divine Providence. This is the truth that although God permits people to act on their own free will, He ultimately yakes whatever happens in the world and turns it to the good. If the Pope believes that he must do something for the faith that would risk his life, I have no doubt that he would do it. But that doesn't mean that he needs to expose himself to unnecessary danger.
(And for the previous poster: no, Catholic's don't believe in predestiny. We believe that we work out our salvation moment by moment. It's a sign of God's mercy that we have free will and that if we fall, we can truly repent and be forgiven with the possibility of attaining heaven. )
I hope this helps!

Because we need to be wise and not foolish. This is not a pefect world, people do stupid things. Not everybody likes the Pope and his beliefs. We call this hate.Better to be safe than sorry. He can have all the faith in the world, but God doesn't want us to be stupid.Jesus wasn't without faith or stupid. He lived on this earth to fulfill a mission, which He did.He had a destiny He fulfilled. It was His purpose. The disciplies had many people that hated the m and sometimes bad things happen to good people.WHY???????

The Pope has faith in God -- not necessarily faith in people. Popes have been shot at by people because, unsurprisingly, there are people in this world crazy enough to go after the Pope. Mental illness can lead you in all sorts of strange directions.

The pope has no faith.. he can not tell you that he is going to heaven...because he dose not know... no pope has ever been able to say that his salvation was assured...This is not my "opinion"... this is roman catholic law... a priest could be kicked out if he taught or told anyone that their salvation was assured... this is why the RCs are not of The Christian Faith. Any one of the True Christian Faith knows for sure that their place in Heaven is assured.

Jesus is not was. He definitely is not an idiot, those like you he died for your sins also so you have the free choice to be saved. I only see the Pope as a man of God also. I don't believe I need a middle man to talk to GOD or pray to him or anything else.

I'm not a big fan of the office of the Pope but to answer your question I would say that any religious leader who bases their faith upon the Bible has to take prudent precautions because faith is not an excuse to "put God to the test".
"Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, "'He will command his angels concerning you,' and "'On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'" Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'" Matthew 4:5-7

There are many people who would like to kill the Pope.
The Pope is being wise when he drives in a bullet-proof vehicle.
I support his doing this.
Cordially,
John
P.S. I am not a Roman Catholic.

The Pope knows that, as the leader of millions of his faith, he has a responsibility to show a degree of caution. He is also required by his faith to be a "good steward" of what God has given him, which means acting responsibly and not courting self-destruction.

Why would someone want to shoot President Regan? John Hinkley wanted to impress Jodie Foster! There are alot of kookoo nutjobs out there, and while I know why you would ask a question like that, the reasoning just makes sence to try to protect him, just like anyone else in a position of such high reguard.

To Catholics here, I thought you believed in predestiny, you know, when your time is up it's up, nothing you do will prevent you from dying when your numbers called, right? Maybe the pope doesn't really believe in that, huh? That's how the Catholics come off to me where I work.
