Gilly Bean's right. Just ask. Actually, Xanax is the weaker of the two meds and it has a much shorter half-life, so your doctor probably will not think you are "drug seeking." The side effects are pretty much identical, so don't think you can use that as an excuse for switching.
I don't know your dosing or frequency, but you might only need a short-acting agent (Xanax) a couple of times per week. Klonopin is more commonly used to keep you mellowed out all the time and Xanax is usually used as needed for something like an acute anxiety attack or anxiety provoking situation.

Same class of drugs but imo, totally different. I am a dedicated Xanax user but also have Klonos here. The main difference is Xanax has a much, much shorter half life meaning it leaves your system quicker and so you need more. This is what makes Xanax the most addictive of the benzos and the one doctors are ever increasingly hesitant to prescribe. Klonopin stays longer so you will need less of it but it positively is not as fast acting as Xanax in my experience. Based on my using both, I would honestly say Xanax is closer to a street type of drug in that you definitely can get a high from it if you take too many. Klonopin on the other hand, I find impossible to abuse. Take more than prescribed and I find you just fall asleep. So, they both have the same general effect of calming you cause they both work the same exact way. It's just a personal preference. But in my experience, the lieklihood of getting addicted to Xanax is exponentially higher than Klonos because it's basically insta-calm and fades quicker where Klono just does what it's supposed to do and stays in you longer. It's a personal choice. You need to test them out but if I were being 110% honest, I would recommend Klono. these Xanax are an absolute ***** to kick once you get on them.

Just tell him you would like to try a different med, and see if the symptoms clear up better. Ask him what his thoughts on xanax are. I take xanax for anxiety attacks, and it's been a godsend to me. I've never tried Klonopin, though.

Actually Xanax is a lighter drug. Klonopin has many more heavy duty side effects. I use Xanax, as needed for "racing heart/panic symdrome" and it works great. No long lingering symptoms and does not make me too tired. Ask the Dr..

just ask. if you tell your doctor that the klonopin is not working for you very well anymore and would like to try something else, he will probably prescribe something for you. if you ask to try xanax, he will more than likely let you try it because it is weaker than klonopin. doctors are pretty likely to let you try new medications if you just tell them that you feel the drugs arent working as well, you are feeling more anxious, it is not calming you down as well anymore, etc.
