It means that if you really screw up but you learn from it then it's not all bad. Our whole life is a learning experience but some person just don't learn the lessons, they keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again. So learn from your mistakes the first time, and instead of it being a mistake, it's a learning experience. If you're making the same mistake for the tenth time, you're slow learner!!

True knowledge comes from two variables in life 1) Those learnt by books and 2) those learnt through application..... Therefore; in theory, even if one makes a mistake; as long as they learn from that mistake it wasn't a total loss. But when one stops learning he/she becomes ignorant, especially to the world and it's changes around them.
Here's a few quotes to express my meaning:
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing. ~John Powell
A man of genius makes no mistakes. His errors are volitional and are the portals of discovery. ~James Joyce, Ulysses
Truth will sooner come out of error than from confusion. ~Francis Bacon
If you shut your door to all errors truth will be shut out. ~Rabindranath Tagore, Stray Birds, 1916
Mistakes are the usual bridge between inexperience and wisdom. ~Phyllis Theroux, Night Lights
Mistakes fail in their mission of helping the person who blames them on the other fellow. ~Henry S. Haskins
One cannot too soon forget his errors and misdemeanors; for to dwell upon them is to add to the offense. ~Henry David Thoreau
Making mistakes simply means you are learning faster. ~Weston H. Agor
A man should never be ashamed to own he has been in the wrong, which is but saying... that he is wiser today than he was yesterday. ~Alexander Pope, in Swift, Miscellanies
An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made in a very narrow field. ~Niels Bohr
While one person hesitates because he feels inferior, the other is busy making mistakes and becoming superior. ~Henry C. Link
If you don't make mistakes, you're not working on hard enough problems. And that's a big mistake. ~F. Wikzek
The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one. ~Elbert Hubbard, The Note Book, 1927

It means, if you keep learning from your mistakes, then you're on the road to success and the mistakes are just stepping stones. Patience and persistence will help you along the way, as well.

You can learn from your mistakes, such as how not to do something. So if you make a mistake, you're still learning.
