I just had to end it with a girl. We only went out twice. I thought it would be eaiser if I did it sooner, and it wasn't !!! I just called her and said that we didn't have that extra we needed to be bf/gf. Maybe you could tell him you've lost your spark and you don't feel the same anymore.
Do you live together? Then it is even harder. I was living with a girl, and after a not so great day I just walked up to her and told her. She cried some and it was not fun, but it had to be done.

Do it in person if you want to be nice - I think doing it over the phone or by email is kind of shitty.

Gently and honestly. Most importantly that you do this face to face not over the phone, email, text message etc. Face to face is a must.
