You can check around, I work in a place where the girls have the option of renting by the week of they can pay comission. You can sometime talk to the owner and see if you can work a deal with her. I worked for a lady that let me pay comission until I built up my clientele and then I went to booth rent.

All of the above.....
My wife has been in the hair business for about 25 years.
We now own a commercial building where she has her own shop.

Renting your space.....this is becoming the most common way of doing business. The reason is that about 6 years ago the tax code interpretation was changed so that it is much harder for salons to prove their employees are self-employed. If you are renting it is unlikely that you'll keep 100% unless you are taking care of your own dispensary and stocking all of your own products you use. Otherwise, you might rent the space and pay for all of the products you use out of a common dispensary.

Sure you can make just commission and no hourly. In fact, that is probably much more common than the other way around. It doesn't make a lot of sense for a salon owner to pay you any kind of hourly wage, unless you're performing other services in the salon such as receptionist services. They need you to turn clients, paying you an hourly wage makes little sense. They'll want you on commission, or more likely nowadays....renting a station.

I am looking into Barber school even though I am a woman. Tips might be better, no colors to really mess with, and hopefully no crabby woman to deal with? You know how us woman are, we never like our hair. Look up cosmetology or call Lansing Michigan Dept. of Labor Economic Growth 517-241-9288 if you live in Michigan. I am researching this field also to see if I could make it as a career supporting my son. I want to get out of the office field and do something I really like. I started cosmetology graduated to the floor but couldn't finish due to my divorce. I had a blast in school and strongly suggest when you study use flash cards! I passed all test with A's studying that way. I wish you all the luck.
