Overall, a plasma will produce the better picture. However there are advantages and disadvantages of both LCD and plasmas.

Plasmas:
Better blacks compared to an LCD. The dark areas on the screen will retain more detail vs. an LCD.

There has been burn-in problems with older plasmas. When there's a symbol on the screen for too long like a HUD on a video game or a station logo, (has to be hours and hours without a break) it can burn in permanently into the screen. The newest plasmas are much more resistant to this now however.

Plasmas only come in larger sizes. If you're looking for a flat panel HDTV under 37 inches you'll have to go with LCD. LCDs range from 13 inches to 57 inches. Plasmas go as large as 63 inches (might even be more - not sure) and only as small as 37 inches.

Plasmas run hotter and use more electricity.

LCDs:

Writing on screen will look better on an LCD. Also, bright pictures look better on LCDs.

They tend to cost more for a comparable sized plasma.

LCDs do not suffer from potential burn in.

They can suffer from motion blur from fast moving objects on the screen.

Interesting fact: One of the biggest consumer electronics companies, Sony, has announced they will no longer make plasmas and go totally with LCDs.

If you are going to mainly watch movies and TV, then plasma would be the best choice. If you play a lot of video games, then you should seriously consider an LCD.

Just remember, standard definition TV does not look very good on either a plasma or an LCD, especially when compared to a good old CRT. Be sure you can get a high definition TV signal - otherwise it won't matter which type you get.

Definetly an lcd.ive just sold my 42inch plasma and got a sony bravia 40 inch lcd, which is miles better,on average a plasma life time is about 20,000 to 30,000 hours, but with an lcd they should last between 60,000 and 70,000 hours, lcds also use less electric than plasmas.Ive just got myself sky hd and when you watch something like football in hd the picture qualitys amazing compared to normal picture,i even spotted myself in the crowd at the stoke birmingham match last week as that was shown in hd,if youre really intrested in a lcd email me and ill let you know where the best shop is on the internet to get a lcd with wall bracket for a very good price,i know cause i got mine from there, hope ive answered your question well enough.

I would add only a few more points to the answer from maxma327:

You can get LCD panels in 1080p resolution (1920x1080), but plasmas are still 720p (1280x720).

Off angle viewing can affect LCD screens.

As far as the appearance of non-HD images, that must be qualified: if you are watching analog TV, it is true that it may look worse on a HDTV screen; however, non-HD DIGITAL images look very good (much better than analog, but not as good as HD).. By 2009, all analog transmission of TV will cease, and this will no longer be an issue.

It depends on what you want. Generally the smaller TV's benefit from LCD. Most go with plasma for the really big sets. Be very careful of burnin. I would go with LCD although the refresh rate isn't as good and gets worse as the set gets bigger. Plasma sets make a lot of noise and increase the temperature of the room somewhat. I personally would buy DLP sets. No burn in. Find a magazine that reviews TV's and see what they say.

What they dont tell u when you buy a plasma screen is that they need a refill every 2 to 3 years. I'm not sure how expensive this is, but too much messing about for me. I'd go for LCD......

You're going to get varying answers on this subject.

Just wait for SED televisions. They'll be taking out the plasma and LED sets as soon as they're available to everyone at a reasonable price.
