to Jay: obviously u have not understood (IF u did read the Qur'an in the first place) the Qur'an. i've been reading it throughout my life and never did i come across any such verse that says to eliminate those from other religions from the Earth. my advice to u: do not simply accuse other religions out of ignorance just to shine a bad light upon it.
The word "Islam" itself comes from the root word "S-L-M" which simply means "peace".
everytime we meet the other Muslims, who we regard as our own brothers and sisters (despite races, languages, countries, etc) we are highly encouraged to say "Assalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh" which means: " May peace and Allah's mercy and blessings be upon you". which is in itself a prayer for the other's safety. then there's the reply, etc. etc.
another example: Prophet Muhammad opposed the practiced of the jahilities of burying their female infants. He advocated that man and woman are equal before God. and how he sent letters and ambassadors to other countries explaning the message of ISLAM and negotiate on how Islam can comes into their respective countries. so i really wonder why some ppl, w/out even researching on the history, accused that Islam was spread thru the sword.
in the Qur'an, there are many verses including those meaning :" for you your religion and for me my religion", "there is no compulsion in religion", and so on. u may also like to look at the history, how the prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him) propagated ISLAM with mercy and spread it through a peaceful means =)

Any religion has the potential to be peaceful but extremists tend to lose sight of the original purpose/teachings of their religions.
And their actions get all the media coverage because peaceful practicing of a religion just isn't interesting to report on. That doesn't make that religion in particular a violent one.

Islam is not the religion of peace, but Justice. Without Justice there will be no peace. ( The word Islam means "finding peace through submission to God") Also, the Muslims don't follow "Islam," the religion of submission to God. They submit themselves to men, such as mullas, governments and myths.

Wow! To Zoo2626...I find it sad that you condemn another religion, while spewing hate and violence yourself. Islam, like EVERY religion, has it's fanatics that will interpret the scriptures to mean something other than what was intended. The bible is full of stories of violence, murder and betrayal, and yet people still find messages of love, peace and forgiveness. It's all in how you choose to perceive it.

I really like your question and I should say there is a lot of proof. One thing I should point out before giving you the proofs is, don't believe in anything you read or you see (even on everything I have posted). check it out for yourselves:
"If one amongst the non-believers ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure that is because they are men without knowledge."
[Al-Qur’an 9:6]
The Qur’an not only says that a non-muslim seeking asylum during the battle should be granted refuge, but also that he should be escorted to a secure place. In the present international scenario, even a kind, peace-loving army General, during a battle, may let the enemy soldiers go free, if they want peace. But which army General will ever tell his soldiers, that if the enemy soldiers want peace during a battle, don’t just let them go free, but also escort them to a place of security?
This is exactly what Allah (swt) says in the Glorious Qur’an to promote peace in the world.
Islam forbids killing of innocent people. The Qur'an says:
“ … If anyone slew a person unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land it would be as if he slew the whole humanity: and if anyone saved a life it would be as if he saved the life of the whole humanity.” (Al-Qur'an 5:32)
Killing any innocent human being, whether Muslim or non-Muslim is not allowed in Islam. Even in the circumstances of war, this aspect is not to be ignored. The first caliph of Islam, Abu Bakr As-Siddique (R) is reported to have commanded Usama ibne Zaid (R):
“I command you to do ten things: you must not kill a woman or a child, or an elderly person; do not cut down trees, or vandalize homes, or wound a sheep or camel except if you must eat it; do not drown a palm tree, or burn it, do not be treacherous; do not be cowardly; and you will pass by people who have devoted themselves to monastery life: leave them alone with their devotions.” (Tarikh At-Tabari, V.3, p.210)
Thus killing children or innocent people are not allowed in Islam
if the Muslims wanted to kill every non-muslims than why:
Muslims ruled Spain for about 800 years. The Muslims in Spain never used the sword to force the people to convert. Later the Christian Crusaders came to Spain and wiped out the Muslims. There was not a single Muslim in Spain who could openly give the adhan, that is the call for prayers.
Muslims were the lords of Arabia for 1400 years. For a few years the British ruled, and for a few years the French ruled. Overall, the Muslims ruled Arabia for 1400 years. Yet today, there are 14 million Arabs who are Coptic Christians i.e. Christians since generations. If the Muslims had used the sword there would not have been a single Arab who would have remained a Christian.
The Muslims ruled India for about a thousand years. If they wanted, they had the power of converting each and every non-Muslim of India to Islam. Today more than 80% of the population of India are non-Muslims. All these non-Muslim Indians are bearing witness today that Islam was not spread by the sword.
The famous historian, Thomas Carlyle, in his book ’Heroes and Hero worship’, refers to this misconception about the spread of Islam: ’The sword indeed, but where will you get your sword? Every new opinion, at its starting is precisely in a minority of one. In one man’s head alone. There it dwells as yet. One man alone of the whole world believes it, there is one man against all men. That he takes a sword and try to propagate with that, will do little for him. You must get your sword! On the whole, a thing will propagate itself as it can.’
The best reply to the misconception that Islam was spread by the sword is given by the noted historian De Lacy O’Leary in the book ’Islam at the cross road’ (Page 8):
’History makes it clear however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races is one of the most fantastically absurd myth that historians have ever repeated.’
Islam is derieved from the word salaam which itself means peace.
The terrorist acts attributed to Muslim suspects, should not be attributed to Islam or the Muslims in general but to individual human weaknesses. Such human failings occur among all religious and ethnic groups. Recorded history has not witnessed an incident similar to the ‘Holocaust’. However, one is not expected to and should not attribute the holocaust to Christianity or to Christians in general.
There is a lot of proof that Islam is not a voilent reliegion. I think u got my point?!

The common saying is that the proof is in the pudding. Well, this pudding tastes strangely like the spilled blood of countless innocents. And the flavour just keeps getting stronger every day.
