I have never heard anyone want to speak spanish without having it forced upon them in school. The reason we don't want mexicans here is cuz they need to learn that you can't run away from your problems all the time. I mean they have thier own country and they let it get the way it is today. The other thing they have to realize is that its not a free ride here in America..I have no problem with people coming here legally but seriously...How many countries do we have to help out before the world realizes that we aren't here for handouts.

I think some are afraid they can't learn another language and that it's too hard. Others think that learning another language is the same as capitulation to a different culture. If anything, I think learning another language helps to expands one's horizons, and makes life more interesting. I took Spanish in univerisity over 15 years ago... and I'm learning how to speak French these days. EDIT I beg to differ re: the comment about Canadians not complaining about French. Some do. When I was up in Victoria, BC back in '04, I went to an ATM...which of course was in French and English. I mentioned to a couple from Alberta how I was surprised about seeing French instead of Spanish like I'm used to in the States...and oh, this couple just started going off about how much they hate the French Canadians and why can't they learn English...kinda like some folks get mad at Mexicans in the US. Crazy, no? EDIT Hey, I'm not feeling any love here...where are those thumbs ups?????

There is no correlation between wanting to learn the language of a certain people and liking the same group of people. Although I have nothing agaisnt Mexicans, I only have something against the people in the US here illegaly, I could care less what race they are. If I want to learn a language, I'll learn it, regardless of wether or not I like the people. Also your question is wrong on so many levels. Do you think Mexico is the only Spanish speaking country? With your logic (that you only want to learn a language of someone you like) than maybe a lot of people admire Spain, or one of the other 20 or so countries that speak it.

As far as I know..I have not personally heard anyone I know say anything like, that about those that are LEGALLY here. I have nothing against people from other countries wanting to come here and try to make a better life. Heck..If you think about it, EVERYONE came here from another country, maybe it was many generations before you were even born. The Native Americans were here 1st..So technically..THEY could be saying the same think to the rest of us.BUT I think what pisses people off are those who come here illegally. My family came here a century ago thru Eilis Island. As far as learning to speak it,,,it might just be a curiosity..I have learned to speak it fairly well..due to where I work,.a vast majority off the work force speaks it.

I disagree completely! I don't want to learn spanish! I only do it because I have to! This is America, where we speak ENGLISH! If the Mexicans want to come over here how about they learn to speak our language? Instead of when People make things and include instructions, they have to put spanish on there because the Mexicans don't think they should have to learn English in AMERICA...Thats pretty stupid!

The only reason I learned Spanish was to keep up with my beautiful Mexican wife. If it were not for Mexicans, who thankfully build my house, I would be living in a cardboard box. Many Americans need to learn English!

Learning languages is for business. Spanish is the number four top spoken language in the world. Usually with spanish you get the gist of French, Italian, Portuguese, and Catalan... and some basic arabic.

I like to learn Spanish, but I would prefer to learn to speak it like a Colombian or Venezuelan (much more pleasing accent than the Mexican).
