I highly recommend a psychologist because talk therapy is the most effective way of overcoming your mental illness. A psychiatrist will prescribe medications to alter your mood, which is okay if you are an absolute basket case and unable to talk reasonably about your problems, but won't solve your problems. Most psychiatric medicines have side effects that make it difficult to function normally.

There have been many good advisors here, distinguishing between the role of psychologist and psychiatrist, the emphasis being that psychiatrists are the only ones that can prescribe you medicine. Some psychologists, thought, have a policy of 'formally' recommending to your family care physician medications that may be of help to your mental state or ability to function, and then your family doctor may be able to get you the medications you need.

In some circumstances, such as a long history of mental illness, one depends most heavily on the aid of a psychiatrist, since such a person usually benefits from prescriptions, rather than mere talk and advice. Sometimes the advice a psychiatrist or psychologist gives is not very helpful. I have noted this often. But just this year, at age fifty two, I finally had a series of sessions with a psychologist who REALLY connected with me and taught me a way of *seeing things* that I had NEVER heard of before. It was, in addition to my normal psychiatrist half hour a GREAT IMPROVEMENT for my day to day attitudes. And so, I would say that psychologist will be able to help you with your attitudes, help you to see things in a way which is beneficial to YOU as you go through life. To help you see where you stumble, and help you solve the problems in habit, motivation, or presumption which make you stumble. A psychologist can, therefore give you a certain kind of mental tool.......which can help you DEAL with the hardships of daily events which relate to your mental or emotional distresses or inabilities. With me, it was my inabilities, or lack of a respectable level of ability to comprehend the dynamics of social situations. He helped me A LOT. More than any other psychiatrist or psychologist, along the lines of....HOW I LOOK AT THINGS.......but my psychiatrist is the one who helps CURE my mental illness with talk and medicines. I love my psychiatrist very much, and have been going to him for ten years...he is a real human being, not aloof...he is precious to me. He saved me. And so, my psychiatrist I think saved my life, while my psychologist helps me live it. That is the distinction, I'd make. Angel

well, it's really up to you. a psychologist usually analyzes people's problems but cannot diagnose any thing for the "client". A psychiarist, on the other hand, diagnoses a patient to determine his or her mental health and is usually the one who can prescribe medication. generally, being a psychiatrist takes longer that being a psychologist because it is in the medical field

I think it depends of how bad is your problem. If you got a big problem that represents a danger for your life, health or physical security then it is a psychiatrist. The same if you are a danger for other's people life and other's people physical security.
Psychologist is more for just talking, I call it the light part and the psychiatrist is for extreme cases when the person or other people are in danger.
By instance if you think of killing yourself or if you tried to kill yourself

It depends on your needs. Both of them can diagnose you. Psychiatrists prescribe medicines. Psychologists can't prescribe medicines, but they use various kinds of therapies to help people deal with their problems. So it really depends on the nature of your problem.

If you need medicines you go to a psychiatrist. If you need therapy you go to a psychologist. A lot of people need both medicines and therapy, so they see both a psychiatrist and psychologist.

If the one you go to first isn't right for you they usually tell you that or you feel it yourself and then it's not a problem for you to go to the other one.

It depends....some people just need only a psychologist; some people (like myself) need both.

To tell the difference:

Psychologists are the counselors. They're the ones with the Ph.Ds and M.S.s

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who are legally allowed to prescribe medication.
