Just remember that toy/small dags always view kids as competition. So, if you have young children, no small dogs.

Boxers are awesome and extremely good with kids and even babies!

They bond very closely with whomever you raise them around. And although a boxer loves everyone and would much rather lick a stranger's face, after someone hurts their family (they see you as their family) they won't think twice about defending you from the agressor.

They stand in the 20-24 inch range and are about 50lbs grown up. They should live inside during the winter when it snows as they have a short fur coat. They don't shed as some dogs do.(especially longer haired dogs)

They are quite energetic. They enjoy running and are almost too intelligent. The last boxer we had understood an extensive vocabulary that included, locations, different toys and some differences, people, and small number amounts.

Boxers are inquisitive. It's because of their very curious nature and how easilly they learn that they are often employeed as seeing eye dogs, police work, or search/rescue.

If I ever get another dog, it will be a boxer. I miss mine.

PS. if you do get one stay away from any all white "rare" boxers. They are albinos that got all the weak genes.

Labs are good as are the others you mentioned. With all honesty though and I'll give you a web address so you can look it up, this breed is ranked very close to the Golden Retriever for temperament, it is very smart, and very good with kids. The only drawback is it can be somewhat territorial with other animals or strangers, not vicious, just protective. It is the Pit Bull. We have two, both were strays and I would and do leave my own son with them before I would our Lab. They are very energetic and would love to run with you.

I grew up with many dogs as a kid, and I have to say that our BORDER Collie (black & white) was the absolute best dog we've ever had. "Blackie" was very good with kids and so very smart. FYI...the other dogs you mentioned get bored very easy and tend to dig/chew/destroy things in your home & yard if you don't keep them active, all the time. My Mom had a Shitzu that was the best "small" dog I've ever known. He was like a little human being, and was also good with all the grandkids. Not good for running, though. Good luck!

I've had a dozen different breeds of dogs so far in my life and the BEST one with kids is a miniature schnauser. They don't get nearly as big as a shepherd. They do need to be groomed a couple times per year, but they are very smart, easy to train and loyal.

beagles are great, but you might not like their voice! golden retrievers are great family dogs, and quite smart. if you look you can find a small boned female that wouldnt get as big as a male. also, a female doesnt have quite as much hair. min-pins are really smart and would be a good running companion. they are good with kids if you get them as a puppy. visit a good pet shop and get familiar with a few breeds. then if you wish you can visit personally with a breeder. good luck

i worked at a dog kennel for 3 years that is my expereince ok, but poodles amd cockers are not the way to go pure bred cockers have the tendency to have complications with urinating alot, me personaly think the smaller the dog they either have the tendency to be agressive or barkers. you would want for chrildren is a mutt mixed with a small breed and a medium that is known for friendly behavor i don't know if this helps any.

I have a sheltie mix and she is perfect for what you want. I would recommend you avoid beagles. A small labrador mix might be just right for you. Look in the dog pound for this mix.

An English bulldog or a staffishire terrier are two very nice dogs. We had a staffi when my sister was small... she used to sit on it's back and pull it's ears and play with it... They are really protective as well.
