Resolution simply refers to the fineness of detail that can be distinguished in an image,
In another word...sharpness.
The smaller the pixel capability of a lens equals the higher the pixel count a camera or camcorder can achieve equals the higher the quality of the image they will record.
ex: A "high-resolution" camera mounted in a Satellite in space 250 miles up, taking a photo of your car, would have resolution sufficient enough to define the characters on your license plate.

Maximum quantity of information able to be recorded on media.
Higher resolutions require storage/reproduction of greater amounts.
This limited by physical characteristics of lens and media object used.
Same concept in printers, computer displays.
HDTV versus TV is simply a greater amount of information being
delivered and replicated(okay and change in display format size- it's a math/hardware thingy)
The higher resolution is usually bestest. Also usually most expensive. If the result is being displayed on an old TV(non-HDTV capable) you will be happy saving money...
If you're a Hollywood wanna be than splurge... BUT check the prices on extra batteries, recharge methods, transfer methods...
happy videoing!

It refers to the sharpness of the image that can be produced. 'High resolution' simply means able to record finer details, smaller objects, etc.
