My period is over a week late, but preg tests are negative. The last two days I have had some brownish discharge, but that's it- no real bleeding or anything. I know it is common to not have a period with the Mirena IUD, but I didn't think it was the same with the copper one (Paraguard). Has anyone had this experience?

I've had the ParaGard for over a year now, and have never missed a period. I did, however, have a few hours of spotting between periods. It lasted for one evening, then stopped. My ob/gyn said not to worry...as long as I wasn't exhibiting any other symptoms, it could have been anything. And to the lady who said the copper was only 89% effective, that's not true. It's over 99% effective. :)

If you recently got it, it could be that your body is taking a while to get used to it. Usually it's the other way around...it irritates your uterus and makes cramps and bleeding heavier for a few cycles.

Have you had a great deal of stress lately (new job, moved, family situations, etc.) This can throw your cycle off, too. I'd call your ob/gyn and ask him/her.

I've never experienced this problem myself but my mother was on the cooper coil and got pregnant 3/4 times. they say that the cooper coil is only about 89% effective. Periods can sometimes be a week late so give it another week if nothing happens call your doctor and arrange an appointment to have a pregnancy blood test done.

This sounds like something you should speak to a physician about...immediately. Particularly if you are having a discharge. Don't rely on advice you get from other people! It's a good starting point, but really the best advice comes from a medical professional.

I heard that they both have similiar side effects, so it can be a possiblity that the symptoms are just that ...... a side effect. i have a Mirena and I love it.
