minimum of $80k per year. living in manhattan, you get screwed in taxes, you have to pay fed, state and city taxes so you don't actually get to keep a lot of what you make. $80k per year will give you about $4k a month of disposable income. Assuming you can find an apt for $2k a month (not a 1 bdrm in a doorman building, but maybe a studio or a 1bdrm in a walk-up building), that leaves $2k a month of spending money on food, travel and entertainment. NYC is an expensive city and it's not unheard of to go out and spend $300 - $500 per night.
so bottom line. $80k will let you scrape by if you want to have a fun but careful and limited lifestyle. if you want to be secure in the knowledge that you can do what you want, eat out when you want, go clubbing when you want, you should be aiming at more like $140k per year which is like that starting salary of a first year attorney.

My bf has had his job at social services for a bit over 4 yrs now and he is 25 (26 in feb.) right now (before taxes) he is making $16,000.00 That's not a lot for where we live, I live 8 hours north of NYC. He will get a raise when he hits his 5 yr. mark in October, I believe that will make him at $24,000. Now if you want to compare to what I make (I'm 22), it's not much. I make about $200.00 a week, $800.00 a month and sometimes less if I can't work (medical stuff or sick etc.). In the summer I make a bit better money, $1000.00 a month from June-early September. I plan on opening my own business by the end of this year and making at least $1400.00 or more a month.

Instead of thinking of it that way, you should calculate where you can afford to live (i.e., which apt at what price) based on whatever your salary IS. Ideally, rent should not exceed 1/4 of your monthly paycheck, but in Manhattan, it could be closer to 1/2. I lived in the city for 9 years, throughout my 20s, and wasn't able to save a DIME b/c of rent, and I made over 70k at the time. Move to Hoboken instead.
