we have a six ft. chain link fenced yard on 1/2 an acre. i have four dogs.yes all besides the puppy are fixed. he keeps digging his way out within a matter of min. to play with the dog across the street. he always is back the second i call him. my neighbors are terrified of dogs however and last time he got out( i had him before he even left the front yard) they called animal control. the officer said that if he gets called again then Gus has to go to doggy jail. h es been to obedience and we go to the puppy park every night plus he gos out jogging with me every other day. i dont want to chain him up i think thats mean since we have a huge yard. we even put cinder blocks along the bottum of the fence but he still gets out.

You have what's called an escape artist. Everyone is saying electric fence, but that's not really the point. He's digging under, everyone, not climbing over. Here is the solution:

Get some fine mesh wire and lay it across the ground, like, flat on top of the grass, so that it covers the grass which runs along the fenceline to a depth of about two metres away from the fence. Like you would lay a blanket on the ground for a picnic. See, the dog can't dig through the wire mesh. It's simple but effective.
Your neighbours are quite right. It's not acceptable to have dogs roaming, even if it is just across the street. Anything could happen.

Either chain him; concrete the foundations of the fence to a depth of like metres; or lay the wire across the ground and peg it down. Your dog may hurt his feet trying to dig through the wire, but if he does, then he won't do it again. Experiment with the wire mesh so that it stays down and is wide enough. And the grass will still grow up through it. Good luck!

Put a brick underground in the places he digs out that way he can't dog out because he will hit the brick or cinder blocks or dig all around the fence like 6-12 in and add extra fence so that it goes in the ground so he can't dig out.
I've also heard pepper works but I had a dog that was a digger and it didn't work.
But just putting the cinder blocks on the ground won't stop him because he can dig under it so you need to make sure what ever you use that it be barried in the ground.
Good Luck

Try the electric wire line that runs on the bottome of the fence to prevent the dog from digging and getting under. This worked great for a friend of mine's dog.
Sounds like he is getting plenty of chances to play with other dogs and relieve his energy. He may just really like the other dog.
Good Luck.

Yes, my dog does the same thing, only she jumps. When my dad had some pups that dug under the fence he put an electric wire right down along the bottom and when the dogs touched it, pow! After a few times with the electric wire they stopped digging altogether. You might try that.

You need to watch your dog before he becomes street pizza. Let him run around with you watching in the yard, and if you cannot watch him, a chain or a large cemented in kennel may be nesscary. Theres not going to be a simple soultion to keep your dog from digging. some dogs will never be trained or grow out of this habbit, it is just bred into them.

this may seem unfair, but as long as he gets plenty of supervised play time, its not mean.

I think putting up a 'run' would work. A 'run' is like a clothesline. You have two places to attach a wire (rope wears thin and breaks). It can be as long as a clothesline can be. You put a pulley wheel on the wire and attach a long leash to the pulley. He can run along the wire and have room with a real long leash attached to be almost all over your yard, but he can't go farther than that. Just be careful that there are not any obstacles along the run path that it can get tangled up in.. not that it would get hurt, but getting tangled up is not fun and then they have to stay there and wait for you to come and untangle them.

Get a fence charger and run a line at the bottom of he fence and one on top. Economical and effective..It'll take about 5 minutes and 'ol Gus will be happy to stay in the yard....

There are electric fences but they're a bit expensive. The best training for any dog, as you probably know, is your disapproval. Spank him next time and chain him for a short time. When he doesn't dig out, reward him with a dog treat.

Couple of ideas-

I bought a dog run/kennel out of fence material that has a roof on it- you could put it upside down so he can't dig out when you can't watch him.

Put him inside.

Give him to the people who own the dog across the street- or schedule play dates.

get the real invisible fence. ive heard it works great. no cheaper ones.
put logs around the bottom of your fence.
yes fix him.
or get a big dog lot, bury part in the ground.watch him when u let him into big yard. scold him if he trys to dig.
try water gun. say no !!!
rolled up newspaper may work.i had a fence jumper once, it got annoying. i had to relocate her to the country to run free.(new family). u may have to do this.
but you need to make the dog respect you.
take dog training classes together.(obediance).
anyway, best of luck.
