Some causes like others have said may be due to eczema. My son has had it since he was about 8 mons. old. Regular pediatrician gave us a referral to an allergist and she was able to perform a skin test. It's not the most reliable. The best test for allergies would have to be a blood test. The doctor found he was allergic to eggs, wheat, soy, peanuts and cod fish. My son now uses Zyrtec (prescription medication as antihistimine) and for his skin I like to use the Aquaphor gentle wash (find it at Babies R Us).

I would really recommend staying away from hydrocortisone as much as possible. There are a lot of side effects from using it, especially in smaller children.

I hope you find an answer to the dilemma.

In the pharmacy where I work, the most common cause has been a fungal infection on the skin. What was thought of as "diaper rash" or "heat rash" is now being treated with an OTC medication like Clotrimazole (available at any Target or Walgreens or WalMart pharmacy). The enzymes in the sweat or urine cause the ichiness. A thin layer of Hydrocortisone 1% is very helpful also.

Bath soap - Pure & Natural Soap is good for young children
Ivory and Dial are bad at least they were for my children.

Clothes Washing soap - All washing soap is best- the one that is Hypoallergenic

Dryer sheets - are really bad don't use on the child's clothes

Chocolate - Soda Pop - Strawberries - peanuts- are top allergens

Cat and dog - dander

If you wash your babies clothes with other clothes that have been worn to work on cars can cause itchness - it is best to wash babies clothes seperately from other clothes until they are older.

The best way to wash a babies clothes is to run it through the washing cycle with the soap and or bleach then run it again without any soap or bleach.

my kid drools like crazy because he's teething, and always spills water down his chin when he drinks. If we let his shirtfront get wet and stay that way too long, especially if it's hot out, he'll start itching and develop a rash. Same happens when it's really hot and he naps laying on his stomach...sweats around his neck and chest area, then itchs. That's all I know, except to point out that maybe your kid is allergic to something.

I'd check with your doctor, my son had eczema, went away on it's own. When he did have it, my dr prescribed hydro-cortizone cream. It can work wonders. You can actually buy it over the counter, but it's cheaper and stronger if you get a prescription.
Of course, it could be something else, so I'd still visit the dr.

allergic reaction to anything including bug bites, detergent you are using, soap you are using, a pet you have, spray you've sprayed or fregrance you've used, the fabric softener you use (or don't use), wool based fabrics, etc etc. If your child is developing a rash or it becomes intolerable, you must get him/her to your doctor or an allergy clinic asap to assist you in identifying what is causing it..
