I love dogs, and we always had dogs as kids. If I didn't have a dog now and was looking for a dog for my kids or grandkids, you know what I would get? An English Spaniel, more commonly called a Bird dog. They are wonderfully loyal, friendly and smart. They are extremely protective of family members though, particularly children . We had one that stayed right with my son all the time, my son is physically/mentally challenged. She adored him and it was obvious.

Cocker Spaniel is medium sized and good with kids. Many of the answers you got are considered large breeds. Also, collie's and border collies are not good with children. I wouldn't recommend one with children. If you want to go a little larger, Golden Retrievers are awesome with kids and strangers.
Good luck.

Check out a whippet. I have one and the kids in the neighborhood love her. They require a lot of exercise, though. Mine is also hyper protective, but that may be because she was rescued from a bad situation and may not be indicative of the breed. Good Luck!!

a golden retriever. I have one, Molly, and she is like Eeyore. She is so patient. She is probably considered a little bigger then medium. I keep her groomed to keep the hair level down. She is a super sweet dog!

American Pit Bull Terrier or an American Bulldog . If you raise them with kindness and you teach your kids to love them , you won't find a better breed of dog to raise with your kids .

border collie---although they NEED interaction because they are very energetic if they get bored they tend to get into trouble so it isn't a dog you can feed and expect to entertain himself unless you have lots of land for it to run on and play

Any of the labradors. They're generally intelligent and friendly.
