technically it is because the bible says "thou shalt not take the lord god's name in vain" and so by saying that you technically are doing that.

no how could it be blasphemy? In what part of it have you blasphemed, oh my God! The most correct definition of blaspheme is The act of claiming for oneself the attributes and rights of God. You can also blaspheme against the holy spirit by attributing the works of God to another deity or being.

screamodood,
Well there you have it. The traditionalists say it's a sin, and the free aren't worried about it.

I think it has to do with what's on your heart when you say it. If you mean something against God, He will know. If you are speaking like most people, out of surprise or simply as an exclamation, I figure there is no problem. But that's my opinion.

So you are asking because . . . . .?

It's not Blasphemy or a sin, and remember, God spelled backwards is Dog.

blasphemy is anything against God, If I use God's name in vain it is against the 10 commandments, therefore it is blasphemy.

Its hard to say,
To use Gods name in vain is more on the order to damn something, that can not be damned or will not be damned.

Like striking your thumb with a hammer and saying something like:
"God Damn hammer" or better
"Yehovah Damn this hammer"

Oh My God, is more of an expression of surprise and not using God in vain.

Unless I am speaking of God, I do not use God in my sentences... including Omg. I would opt for Oh my goodness.
