Actually, Christopher Columbus was Portugese. He couldn't get anyone to finance his trip to look for the western route to China, so he went to the Queen of Spain. She financed his trip by selling off some of her jewels.

Christopher Columbus just "stumbled" upon North America on his way, and stayed to explore. When he returned to the Spanish court, he brought back many wonders from the New World. And the Spanish conquering of the Americas began.

Do some history research. Columbus wasn't British and was never the prime minister of anywhere.
