I've never had any of these smaller dogs, and I think that they are somewhat high maintenance grooming-wise. You should definatley get in contact with various breeders of each dog; they would be able to pinpoint you in the right direction...Yorkies can live anywhere from 12-15 years, Shih Tzu's can live anywhere from 15 years or more, Toy Poodles 12-15, and a Maltese is about 15-18....check out www.dogbreedinfo.com...that should give you some summarized accounts of the dogs that you are looking at. Again, talking to people who actually have these dogs is a must...most breeders are more than willing to help you. Happy Hunting!

A yorkie is a very fragile dog being the size they are. The shih tzu is the strudiest of the toy dogs. Most dogs live in be 15 years or older.

You are on the right track because you are thinking of different kinds of dogs. However, there are a couple of other issues to consider.

First, there are THOUSANDS of incredible, loving and healthy dogs at shelters looking for loving homes. Most are mixes, and very cute. Some are purebreeds. If your local shelter doesn't have what you are looking for, drive to another nearby city or look at petfinders.com

I rescued a 7lb poodle mix and an 8lbs pug mix that need good homes in the NY area.

Also, many pets and their owners are unhappy because the owner picked a dog based on the breed, not the personality. The most important factor in having a happy relationship with your dog is making sure that your personalities are a match. I suggest searching on the web for a puppy personality test, where it tells you how to select a dog for your situation and personality. This is the most important factor.

Dogs can live a long and healthy life, no matter the breed. The key elements are healthy food, vet care, getting them fixed, and providing love and exercise.

hi, well my friend loves yorkies, but they are fragile. one of heres was killed when she was sitting under the recylner and the phone rang, her hubby jumped up, the footstool part went down and killed the little dog.
yorkies have silky hair. i dont think they shed.
a really good house dog seems also to be a snauzer,.
they are tougher.
most small dogs in good health and well cared for can live up to 15 or more years.
dogs like great danes and rottweilers live short lives usually8-10 years.
smaller the dog, longer the life.
i dont know why.
a maltese is beautiful, but lots of future grooming money and easy to hide fleas in thick hair.
best dogs are so called mutts. get a peekapoo mix, poodle /pekaneze.
they are healthier.
purebred dogs can have genetic defects.
like german shepards can have bad hips.
many dobermans have heart problems etc.
maybe go to a shelter /pound first.
many purebreds killed everyday.
save a life!! many shelter dogs are made into movie star dogs.
i think benji was a shelter /pound puppy.
when u house break, do the crate training method. its the best.
be consistant!!! pup wakes up, take him out, pup eats or drinks , take him outside, pup can be trained in less than a month. leave in crate when you cannot watch him.(but not over 4 -5 hours. keep comfortable.
look up crate training on line.
well best of luck in finding the perfect pooch !!!

I chose a Lhasa Apso which is always confused with Shih Tzu. I personally like both. They are both very smart and well behaved. Mine is still alive and should live as long as any other dog.

Maltese are kinda cute too, but maybe I am partial.

You will love any of the ones you mentioned.

You should get a Boxer!

They love everyone and are especially good with kids. Whomever you raise them with is their family and they will protect them if they see them being harmed.

They are energetic and extremely curious. As a result of their intellect they are often used as seeing eye dogs, for police work, and for search/rescue. They learn quickly.

An adult will be around 20-24 inches and weigh near 50lbs. They have short hair and are not shedding dogs. Because of the short hair they should be kept inside from snow. But you'll want your baby with you anyway. :) They tend about to live about 12 years.

You may be able to get some decent advice on here, but if you're seriously considering adopting a new baby, you need to go online and do some serious research yourself. I don't know the life expectancy of these breeds, myself, but I'd imagine you could get a good 10-12 years with any of them. If you're concerned about which breed to get, you need to learn as much about all of them as you can, and this forum is not going to give you ALL the necessary info.

Good luck.

I would go for either a yorkie or a maltese. Perhaps if you narrow the question to a choice between those two you can get a more deffinate answer. Best wishes

I think I need to know more about your home situation to say. Do you live alone? Are you planning to have kids some day? Some dogs are good with everyone, some good with one owner. Some are afraid of kids. I suggest you buy a good dog breed book and see the pros and cons of the dogs you mentioned.
I myself have to mini doxies. They are great for small homes, require little exercise, the short hairs need almost no grooming, and they are great with everyone including kids.
Good luck in you search.
