I am wondering if anyone could share their experiences with destination weddings. I am contemplating whether or not to have one at home or at some place warm. Pros? Cons? Suggestions? Thanks for the help!

I had a destination wedding myself since most of my husband's and my friends and families are in the city that we used to live, so it was for their convenience.

I went to two destination weddings (in Hawaii and another state). The couples who had them wanted some place warm and to save some money. I have to say that it is a lot of hassle for the couple to plan and also a lot to ask out of the guests.

The guests have to take additional time off from work, buy flights, book hotels, and arrange for other things that are involved with leaving home for more than a few days. The idea sounds exciting but it's actually a way of not having a lot of guests because many cannot or don't want to take the time off or spend so much money for someone else's wedding. (Just think of how much most people give for a wedding gift - maybe $50-$150? It would cost one guest more than that amount on airfare alone.)

If you want to have your wedding at some place warm, choose a month with nicer weather. A lot more of your friends will be able to go to your wedding.

Well a plus to having a destination wedding is that it will cost you less. Many places offer you the wedding free when you book your honeymoon there. You will also get to have a nice vacation (or weekend) with your friends and family who come. The downside is of course that you will have less people there. Is it very important for your great-aunt Millie to be at the wedding? If so, then a destination wedding may not be the best idea. Also, those who do come pay for themselves, so give them plenty of time to save up the money if you know people don't have it lying around. Good luck!

I was in a destination wedding in Mexico. They can be very nice if you want to keep the budget low, but would have 300 people wanting to attend at home. They can save money if you do it right. However, if you don't, or try to go overboard, they can actually end up costing you MORE money...consider the cost also of communicating with someone who is in another state or country than you.
My suggestions would be keep it small, if you're going to do it. Look for hotels/resorts that will include everything in a package for one price, and also be sure to ask them about whether or not they will schedule your consultation about getting the marriage license, or if you have to do it yourself. Every place varies with how long you have to be there to get married.

Well a good friend of mine got married in Orlando this year (it was her home town, but all of her friends are from Philadelphia). She invited 200 people and 100 were able to afford to come. However, she had beautiful pictures. It was also more expensive and people were there for a few days to make it a wedding event. This meant she felt obligated to host a pool party the day before and invite out of towners to the rehearsal. Those who could go loved it, but I want my friends and family to be there so I am more tempted to have it closer to home. If you are to do it, plan early and send save the dates out as soon as you know when and where. That will mean more people can come.

Good Luck!

My cousin and his wife live in Philadelphia, but they got married in Ireland in 2000. About 100 family and friends flew over. It was awesome - a trip of a lifetime.

I am getting married next summer in San Diego. We are from there (we currently live in Washington) and we feel that it's a beautiful place to get married. I think you should google places and find what suits you and your fiance.
