I have owned 4 Maltese in my lifetime and the youngest that one has passed away is at 15 years old. I have one that is 10 years old right now and he still acts like a pup. He still like to play with his toys and can keep up with my parents' much younger golden retrievers.

It really depends on the dogs enviorment. If the dog was beat (not saying you beat yours) it'll live for like six years. But if the dog was taken care of, vet vists, shots exercise than the dog would more than likley live to about at the most 16.

Most of the small breeds can live to 16-18 years with good food and medical care. All are prone to obesity due to their owners over feeding leading to diabetes etc.
