When I was 11 I loved the Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators. You might be able to find them in your local library.

an encyclopaedia. really depending on his liies. my son is interested in dinasaurs, also comics so he has lots of dinasaur books and hulk and spider man comic books. butr he also likes spiders and stuff. so i bought him a book on creepy critters. he knows alot about the arachnophias and all creepy stuff. insects. he is also in to drawing. he wants to be a graphic designer. so he has lots of gamestop magazines that come to the house for him monthly. so he can get the 411 on the video games.

How about " Moby Dick " ? or Any book by Julius (Julio) Verne.
My favorite book when I was a kid was " Journey to the center of the Earth ". It really kept me busy.
