I talk to my silver tabby Lucky aka whiskers aka tiger aka smucky lucky aka princess aka brat aka ugly kitty aka tigress
ALL the time. I clean the house and just chat away with her. She sits there and looks at me. I know she is listening to me. It is good to talk to the kittys all the time. They like it. Then again who cares if they understand or not. It makes them feel loved when you pay special attention to them. Talk away. I do it when I am alone it makes the house seem less deserted.

I'm not sure they understand you, but its still cool to talk to the cat. I do it all the time and even though my cat can't make out what I'm saying, he feels loved because I do take time to talk to him. I vent to Melvin all of the time about my day and its like having a friend who just listens....lol. He understands his name and when I say no or stop, the basic stuff. Its about the tone of voice mostly. Keep chatting w/ your cat. I promise, he's feelin' ya!!!

Hi Julia...cats in general cannot understand language as we do in the traditional sense. Rather they observe your body language while you speak, which makes them to appear to understand what you are saying and predict action based on these two when it occurs repeatedly. However...they can learn single words in a language when it's paired with something or someone through training. For over simplification purposes... in order for a cat to understand the command "sit"; when an animal trainer sees the cat sit we capture it and then reward it with a food treat. Eventually the cat begins to associate the word "sit" with food and in turn they learn in order to get more treats anytime they hear "sit" they'll perform the act. I have trained my house cats and exotic cats (cougars, african servals, bobcats, etc) to understand sit, lay down, stay, roll over, toilet train and much, much more.

if you take the time to talk to your cat and listen, it becomes obvious that you can learn each other'a language. the cat won't understand sentence structure and the like but /heshe'll learn that when you make certain sounds, you expect something of him/her. if you take the time to notice, you will see he/she has his/her own special sounds for the things they want from you. it just takes time, and attention. the cats don't understand english so much as they understand you.

I honestly think they do. Certain words cant be spoken around my cat cuz she knows what it means.
my other cat on the other hand doesnt even know his name. he responds more to my voice than anything. i could just make weird noises and he'll respond.
My female does understand distinct words, like outside, treat, no, i love you, whatcha doin, etc, etc.

yes,and whatever language their owners speak. But beyond verbal language cats seem to be astute at observation as well as tone and cadence.I really enjoy having them around my children as well as myself.I find them to be good for my children to play with and to learn small acts of kindness towards them(the cat's on the receiving end, lol).

no, they memorize what each things means. Like when my cat is playing, she has a toy mouse. I say " Give me mousy" and she sort of gives it to me in her own specail way. And when I say "out" she heads outside. And when our car is coming up our driveway she comes running to see us because she knows the sound.

I have read that sometimes they can understand more words than just their name. I have one that knows the word " out "and another one who knew what "come here" meant and "water".
