I am thirteen, and just had my braces off, and my orthadontist has told us that my wisdom teeth are coming in crooked and will push the rest of my teeth forward and make them crooked again if I don't remove them. He wants them out as soon as possible... I am very worried, my mother had hers out in college and I've read that most people have them removed at ages 17-24. Do they put you to sleep? Or numb you? Can anything wrong happen if you are put to sleep?

It's really not that big a deal. If you have your Mom ask the dentist to put you to sleep, they will. I've never heard of anything happening if you're put to sleep. The Novocaine is all I had, and there was no problem. All you feel is the pressure of them pulling the teeth out, it will be more painful after wards, but you'll probably get a prescription for that and it only lasts for a day or two. Truly, not a big deal. Much better than having to get braces put back on!

Two of my friends had theirs out this year. (They were 15 and 16)
If you want to be numbed or put to sleep you can-just ask your dentist for laughing gas to put you out or whatever they use there. Nothing wrong can happen, don't worry. You won't feel anything at the beginning, but after the numbing agent wears off they will probably be extremely tender and may ache for a while. Try not to talk afterwards and keep the gauze ON. Don't worry, you'll be fine.

I was 15 when I had got mine pulled. I was put to sleep, and when I awoke, my whole mouth felt numb. I don't believe anything wrong can happen, I didn't think I being put to sleep would work, but it did. I didn't feel a thing. The next day however, I started to feel it, it hurt bad, but there are worse things I'm sure. I took prescribed medicine to help it, and it worked. My cheeks were huge, also. But they go down after a couple of days.

I just had mine out a week ago. I had to have mine out so they ddin't mess up all the work from my braces too. they gave me an IV and knocked me out. It barely hurt. I got dry sockets though so it sucked. I don't think anything will happen while you're asleep. Just eat alot of jello and soft stuff and learn to chew w/ your front teeth. Also after 2 days do a salt water rinse to keep the holes clean. Don't drink w/ a straw and you'll be less likely to get dry sockets. You'll feel so much better once they're out... then you don't have to worry about going through braces again.

I had three of my wisdom teeth removed this summer. They do numb the area. Done correctly, there is no pain...just a lot of pressure. It's really nothing to worry about. Check out the site I've linked below. It helped me a lot prior to having the operation.

The level of anesthesia varies by the condition of your wisdome teeth, whether they are impacted (below the gum line in your bone), straight, crooked--lots of factors. I had mine out in my 20's, they put me OUT. I felt nothing and the procedures (to me) was like seconds. Woke up and over. Afterwards your jaw is sore, but it's not exactly painful--dull aches. There's also after care w/ irrigating the extraction area. Your doctor can and should advise you of the risks of anesthesia, but they are minor and rare.

My husband had his removed and they numbed him a whole bunch and gave him some pain medicine to take at home for a couple of days after.

They probably give you novicane and put you to sleep if necessary. Everyone I know who has had them removed says it hurt like hell.
