I have an old Symphonic television with a built-in VCR that my dad bought from someone so I could take it to college. It was working just mine a minute ago, but then I tried to eject the VHS tape I had in the machine, and not only would it not come out, but now the television shuts itself off after five seconds. None of the VCR functions work now, but the regular TV stuff works.
1. How do I get the VHS tape out?
2. How do I fix the television set?

I know this set quite well. I used to repair them ages ago. The VCR has eaten your tape and the tape has jammed up a motor. This is why it shuts down. These units are not easy to remove the tape, so take it to a shop and have the tape removed and cleaned. Most shops can do this in a day or maybe while you wait dependent upon their work load for about $50.

Just guessing here but probably the TV is sensing a tape jam and shutting everything down to keep from harming the tape or starting a fire.

See if you can remove the face plate on the VCR without damage, mounting screws MAY be under there or you might have to slide the whole chassis out.

Work slowly and use a phone cam or digicam to take pics as you go so you know what goes where.

As I said, just a guess.

It's not worth repairing if you cannot get the tape out. The tape may be tangled up inside the VCR mechanism, and unless you can take it completely apart, it is not possible to fix.
