As a baby, someone is only learning his or her sense of self. As an indivdual it is important to develop the necessary bodily functions, which is why babies are congratulated on burping when they need to.

It isn't until a few years later that they are ready to comprehend social concepts and their role in interaction with others, so they are not yet ready to be taught that belching in public/loudly is 'bad manners'. It's the same way that toddlers are applauded and have a big fuss made when they 'go potty', and will later learn that poo is not a topic open for discussion with others

With a baby it's different cause if they do not burp they will get sick. When an older child does it,it's different 'cause they know how to be subtle and they are burping loudly on purpose.Besides, children only learn the permanent stuff after the age of 3.It is scientifically proven that memory does not develop before the age of 3so you could try to teach a 0-3 year old that burping is uncooth and they would not understand.Think about it.

Actually, when they burp later on, and then say "excuse me"

is when we say good boy/girl.

I have no idea why people do that. I never did. I just counted them, so I knew if I should keep burping the baby or not.

Because its a good thing that they are burping , so they are not in pain with all of the gas building up in their stomachs. When they are older , they should know better. Hopefully their parents will teach them.

I like your question, it is very logical. I always wondered that myself. But I was told that saying good boy/girl only teaches them that your being polite by knowing that they have done something. I always tell my kids when they were babies and the one I have now "EXCUSE YOU!" They do excuse themselves now. And will later in life!!

we say good boy/girl to a baby when they burped because we are happy that the baby won't have gas pain....but later when they grow old we taught them to say "excuse me" when they have it while other people are around to show their good breeding....

Because when they are babies, we want them to burp so they will not keep us up later at night when they have colic......later in life, it is just rude.

That's because they are doing what they have to do. When they get a little older, then you start teaching them to excuse themselves, etc.
