I have been using pastels off and on again for years, and I am thinking of getting into it again.... I've wondered about fixatives, I have always used unscented hairspray- but I am wondering if this is a good practice, since it is not made especially for art?
What kinds of fixatives do you use and is the pump kind better than the spray kind? Any imput would be great! Thanks, guys! :) SD

Are they oil pastels or chalk pastels?

I'd go with a matte spray from the art supply store. Hairspray will turn your drawings a different color or corrode the paper eventually. If you are using oil, make sure the spray you buy is okay for oil.

Found no benefit to the pump spray. The idea is just that it prevents the inconsistencies sometimes present with spray cans.
