Yes I have had mac and cheese baked with breadcrumbs on the top and I loved it, it was very tasty!
Some other suggestions
Mac and Cheese and add a can of drained Diced Tomatoes
Mac and Cheese and add a few chopped up hotdogs
Mac and Cheese with add hambuger

Yes, just a thin layer....otherwise the flavor of the breadcrumbs over-power the taste of the macaroni & cheese. I also put extra cheese on top.

no, i don't like it baked. i just use the generic kind and add a slice of velveeta cheese to it made on stove top
