Ok so im afraid of needles. Like REALLY afraid. I have to get a blood test to check and see if my thyroid is working because it's large. Can I have them just prick my finger to get blood or do they need a whole viel of it?

They may take more than one vial. I don't like needles either but because of cancer treatments I've had to have blood tests more times than I care to think of. Drink lots of water for the two days before going for the tests. If you're dehydrated it takes longer. The more nervous you are the more tense your skin and tissue is and it makes it more painful so when you sit down in the chair relax totally, be as limp as a dead thing. Don't be afraid to tell the lab tech that you are scared. Look up at the ceiling and count the holes in the tiles or take a Walkman and turn it up loud so you concentrate on something outside your own body. Relax because most of the lab techs are so good that you don't feel a thing.

Why I get my thyroid levels checked, they normally get a small vile. I used to be afraid of needles too, but now it doesn't bother me. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated before you go to get your blood work, so that your veins aren't hard to get.

Personally...and this is my personal opinion, I'd much rather let them draw the vile, than to prick my fingers(for whatever reason). That's simply because 1. I play piano alot and 2. I had my finger pricked before to check my blood sugar, and it hurt!

You can suggest them to use a butterfly needle which isn't big. Also, just to let you know, they don't insert the entire needle. That was what used to scare me, I thought they'd insert the entire length of the needle...but not so. I get the normal needle when I have my blood work done.

Take nice slow breaths, and look away if it bothers you to watch.

*hugs* I'll be praying for you.

Blessings To You & Yours

they'll have to take a whole viel of it, but you can ask them to use a "butterfly" needle on you, which is a really small needle, and it wont hurt as much. When you're getting the blood test done, just don't look, and relax your arm, because tensing your muscles will make the blood test hurt even more. Don't worry, you'll do fine :)!!

I am a nurse and I deal with people on a daily basis who are afraid of needles. Unfortunetly, you have to have a vial of blood taken. It is very inportant to have this done so if you do have a problem, you can get the proper medication started to get the thyroid under control. If you are nervous, bring someone with you who can comfort you. Maybe they can hold your hand and talk to you while you look away from the needle.

They need a vial, I promise it isn't bad at all. I used to be scared too, now I just tell myself I am being a baby and that people right this second are going through chemo therapy. I am lucky it is just a needle.

That really works for me...I used to just worry all night before a test.

You can do it. I am so afraid of needles that I would Rather have a snake or a spider on me. I think next time I have to get poked, I'm going to bring and snake and spider. And if they can get passed them... they can have the blood. I think that is very fair. Yes?
All jokes aside. It is something you have to do for your health, so do it!
