Calories don't come only from fat.

When energy is needed, body first burns carbs and sugar. Every gram of a carb has 4 calories. 60% of the total calories need should come from carbs.

Second, when glucose level gets low and carbs liver reserve gets low, body starts to use fat, and every gram of fat has 9 calories. 30% of the total calories requirement should come from fat.

Last, and only seen in caloric malnutrition, proteins are used. Every gram of protein releases 4 calories. But it is the body's starvation resource, proteins are first used to keep normal walls in the cells, and normal strenght of the muscles. Only the missing 10% of the calories requirement should come from proteins.

A low fat diet can keep the same amount of calories if carbs and proteins are increased. A low calorie diet can mean to eat less carbs and fat. A person with Nutrition title should calculate calories requirement and see that they are fulfilled.

Low fat diet is generally not very good for weight loss purposes. It's probably useful for people with clogged arteries or something. To be healthy, a person needs a certain amount of protein, fat, and carbs.

Low calorie diet, a good one, will be balanced with protein, carb, and fat, hence it's not "low fat", but rather "right amount of fat". But it will have lower calorie count to help the person lose weight.
