Have you ever been stuck behind some old lady in the grocery store checkout, who waits for everything to be rung up, then digs in that huge bag of hers for her checkbook which is at the bottom, then takes forever writing out the check.......etc.
How does that make you feel?
Are you a patient person?
Do you get agrivated because she's holding up the line?
Do you think that she could have at least written the date, and the name of the store on the check while the cashier was ringing it up?
Would you care at all, understanding that due to her age she may be a little slow on the uptake, forgetting that the cashier was going to ask her for money?
Or do you sit there huffing and puffing, thinking come on grandma, get your *** in gear!
Answer honestly please.

i can't believe all of these nice people that are answering this question!! when this happnes to me (and oh boy HAS it!!!) it takes every last fiber of my being not to push ol' granny down, rip a check outta her checkbook and scream at the top of my lungs "THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE A CHECK, IT DOESN"T HAVE TO TAKE A HUNDRED YEARS!!! YOU CAN EVEN START WRITING IT BEFORE THEY TELL YOU THE TOTAL!!! YOU DON"T HAVE TO START OVER IF YOU DON't WRITE NEATLY ENOUGH (omg i thought i was gonna have stroke right there when that one happened!!!)
but unfortunalty i am a relativley nice person who would never do anything like that.
so my answer is no, and i would offer to help her to her car with her groceries. have a nice day. ;)

There was a time when this used to bother me. But as I've gotten older, I try not to let little things bother me. I know longer have road rage. I allow people to get in front of me, most of the time. I try to be more patient of others. Statistically, that elderly lady taking her time at the check out isn't really taking that long. How much time could you possibly be loosing just waiting patiently for her to finish? The same amount of time you'd be waiting if you got irritated. So why waste the emotion? We all could use a little more patience

I am 54 years old. I bag my own groceries and almost always pay with a debit card. I got kind of irritated yesterday when a 30-something old pregnant woman left all her groceries because she forgot to bring her money. It took several minutes for the cashier and manager to clear out the register. Oh well!
What I don't like are people who try to crowd me after I'm done bagging. They know I haven't paid yet, but they bring their cart right up to the card-swiper and I have to ask them politely to move so I can pay. I am so fast at bagging, that usually I can keep pace with the cashier, and I never hold anyone up.
I also get annoyed when several people block the aisles with carts and you can't get through. Have you ever noticed how they all turn their backs to you and pretend they don't know they are blocking people?
Regarding really old people, once I watched a woman pay for her groceries, then forget them all!

It reminds me that I may live to be that age someday and good for her to be able to take herself to the grocery store.
I try to be a patient person and plan accordingly. Which line will I CHOOSE to stand in at the store.
She is from a different era where people were slower and more friendly, and she isnt as sharp as she used to be. She isnt in a hurry to go anywhere so it doesnt matter whether or not she she has the check ready. She isnt thinking about you.

Depends on my mood. I will get aggravated if I've had a bad day, or running late, or stressed or whatever. Regardless of my mood and my inner reaction though, I try to remind myself it's an elderly person, have a little patience and respect, not such a big deal, and get over it.
You can't control how something hits you - if it makes you angry or not. What you can control is your outward behavior. Behave respectfully and you can keep a clear conscience.

That usually happens to me when I am in a hurry. I stand there and bide my time patiently while thinking "get a *** move on!" And then I ask myself, why, when they have all day long, do these little old ladies wait to do their shopping during peak shopping time for working people?

in my college days, yes I would have felt impatient and wanted to rush this poor older woman along. But as I've gotten older (hopefully, wiser) I've grown to be more patient and accept the fact that she is older and moving slower. absolutely nothing that I can do about and that i'm stuck in that line with her. done deal, sit and wait (just like waiting for government service)

I'm patient because there are plenty of times when people in back of me huff and puff because I don't use my card fast enough. Like they have lightning fingers.
