When people would wonder how do they know if they were elected by God for salvation, they came up with this solution a few hundred years ago: they figured that a sign that God has picked a person to go to Heaven and receive grace would be monetary wealthiness. (There was no way of knowing until death, because they did not believe that people could "choose" salvation, and not all Christians went to Heaven. Only those that God elected could go to Heaven.)
I suppose this "evidence" that having money is a sign from God that one is saved has made people pompous. This can lead to thinking "look at all this money I have, God really loves me. You don't have any, so you are unworthy."
This belief system also lead to the American work ethic, so people would try very hard to be successful and rich to prove that they are saved.

Christians are not perfect, they are just forgiven. We are still human just like everyone else and unfortunately there are some among us who don't quite know how to control themselves yet.
