Yes, it is prefereable to keep it clean, but dry cleaning may be a bit much. There is a website that documents the flag code of the US, and recommends warm, soapy water, if that doesn't work, you might find someone that does specialty cleaning. A dry cleaner's may be able to help you develop the right cleaning technique, or a company such as servpro which specializes in water and fire cleanup in houses.

In the event that the flag is "unserviceable", you can take it to the Boy/Girl Scouts of America, or any of the fraternal/military lodges. They will know the proper method of respectfully destroying a flag that is beyond salvage.

The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.
When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. Most American Legion Posts regularly conduct a dignified flag burning ceremony, often on Flag Day, June 14.

NO! You never wash a flag. When it is too ratty, dirty, etc to display, and represent our great country, take it to the Boy/Girl Scouts of America so it will be disposed of properly and with respect. Then get a new one.
