I relize that it is their house, but the only reasons they can think of not to get a dog is 'You have 2 cats already and I don't want a dog' Me and my 2 brothers (one is 19 one is 22, I am 13) want one. My dad says the only way I could is to give away my kitties. NO WAY! I go on puppyfind.com (the best finding dog website i've been to. You should go there) and there are so many wonderful things! They say 'YOUR NOT GETTING A DOG AND I DONT EVEN WANT TO TALK OR HEAR ABOUT IT! I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT DOGS!' And I say 'Your mean you dont care about dying dogs' then they go "phh' and walk away leaving me sooo mad! I try to get them to go to the humane society but they say 'The humane Society makes me feel dirty' It makes me think we aren't related because I am dedicating my life to animals and they hate them! I know this is also happening to other people so I am wondering what can I do!!?? Please, will someone help me? (I asked my mom to look at petfinder.com with me and said stop!)

thanks to everyone i am starting to raise money but the truth is whenever i get some my dad puts it in my bank account. I dont go to the mall unless for school and i do have tones of time. my parents get annoyed of me saying every day im bored what can i do? They are the ones whos saying they dont have time for a dog. which i have to say is a lie because my dad only works on the weekend and my mom gets home at 6:00 from monday to wednesday doesnt work on thursday and friday and gets home at 5:00 on weekend. But even with that the dog would be mine and my respnsibility. I would pick up the poop feed walk play train and love my doggie if i had one. thanks for all your wonderful comments!

If your parents said no then maybe you should listen to them. You can get a dog when you move out of the house. Grow up.

A few ideas - do you have a part time job? You could save up enough to money to pay for the dog. The main expenses will be vet bills and you may have to pay to replace things that the dog chews up or damages. So a dog can actually be rather expensive. But if you earn the money yourself it will show them how much you want one. Also, maybe you could babysit for someone else's dog while the person is away on vacation. Then both you and your parents could get a 'test run' of what it would be like to have a dog in the house and how well you can look after one. Also, if they are dead set against the idea, maybe you can get a volunteer position at the shelter or get a job as a dog walker and you can still get to make friends with and play with dogs.

Dear Shauna, it is wonderful that you are so compassionate and caring, your heart is in the right place, but trust me, there is a world of difference between keeping a dog and a cat. I don't mean to insult or patronise you, but a dog lives for 14 years - will your brothers be there the whole way? Can you see where you will be when you are 27? What about college? I think these thoughts may be going through your parents heads, and I know it is a cliche - but it is their house. I am 42 and love dogs beyond description, but even though we always had a dog at home, I have never been able to have one myself because of college, work, travelling e.t.c. Please don't be mad at your parents - maybe it is just not your time yet. You have a whole, huge, long life ahead of you, other people may be in the right place at the right time now to help. You are one of many who love dogs and want to give one a good home. Even though it is hard, maybe try to accept your parents decision and wait for your time. I am still waiting for mine, and when it comes, well, there are going to be some spoilt, three legged ugly dogs having the time of their life. Good Luck.

If your parents are that much against it, I would at least wait a while, and slowly approach them with the subject little by little when they are in a good mood! Find out if they like small dogs or large dogs, if any and go from there. Right now, they are very upset with the subject, and should be given some time to just cool down and think about it, and maybe they will think they were a bit unfair, and will maybe consider mentioning the subject, and discussing it. In the mean time show them responsibility, like do little things to help them around the house, and make sure they don't have anything to complain about against you. Sometimes parents will come around, right now they may have some heavy problems in their life, or just feel it isn't the right time. People CAN change!!

STOP TRYING TO MANIPULATE YOUR PARENTS and giving them a guilt trip. They have their reasons, and they don't owe you and explanation. SHOW SOME RESPECT FOR THEIR DECISION.
Stop being so childish and realize that the world does not owe you anything, and the world does not revolve around you.
If you think that dogs are easier to care for, forget it. They are like two year olds that never grow up. You have to walk them frequently to maintain their health, and carry a baggie to collect any poop, becuse it's a law in most cities, and if you thought cat poop was bad......try scooping dog poop with a scooper so that it doesn't get smashed on your lawnmower's tires. Yuck!
Decide to accept their rejection gracefully. You will have to at some point, because in the real world, you don't get everything you want.
The only thing you can do is to love and appreciate the kitties you have now. Cats are a prescious gift, and you should already know that.
Be the kind of cat owner you wish you had if you were a cat. My cat worships me. He heels, sits, rolls over, and talks to me a lot. I pamper him. If I were a cat, I would want to be MY cat.
So grow up realize thatIT'S NOT ABOUT HAVING WHAT YOU WANT, BUT RATHER WANTING WHAT YOU HAVE.
Keep studying about dogs, breeds, and their history. Who knows, some day you might want to be a vet. Or maybe you might want to own a kennel and be a breeder. You might want to be a trainer or a handler at dog shows. You may want to train seeing eye dogs for people.
Take care of your responsibilities now, do well in school, and show your parents you have good judgement. When you get out on your own, they will be happy to help you get started with any dog-related venture you have.

Did it ever occur to you that while I can feel how upset you are over this that your parents are just as upset. It sounds to me like they cannot afford a dog honey not that they don't want you to have one and admitting that fact to you would make them feel worthless. So stop annoying them.
You're 13 yrs.old.You're old enough to get a paper route, babysit, walk dogs or bathe them all on a regular basis to get the money to buy the dog,pay for food and vet bills and everything else a dog needs to keep it happy and healthy.
But before you set your mind to doing this I want you to think hard.Dogs are pack animals and require far more attention than cats do.Have you got the time?
Are you responsible enough to deal with a dog on an everyday basis?I can tell you from experience that their needs MUST come before your own.It does'nt matter how sick,or tired you are-they still have to be cared for.If that means going for a walk in the pouring rain while you have a 102 temperature too bad.
Do you really want to spend every penny you have on food AND VET BILLS OR DO YOU WANT TO GO TO THE MALL WITH YOUR FRIENDS FOR THAT NEW C.D.OR A COOL PAIR OF SHOES OR JEANS?
Dogs are like having a 2 yr.old around all the time. Are you ready to spend all your free time training and keeping your dog from getting bored and out of mischief or would you rather go swimming or to a movie with your friends?
Vet bills are very expensive. On top of food. The dog needs his shots and registered. Our first german shepherd cost $250.00 and we found out he had a health problem requiring surgery. His first year alone I paid well over a thousand dollars in vet bills alone. Then we found out he has further health problems requiring regular vet visits and medication that has to be given twice daily and I'm afraid to add up vet bills over the last 4 yrs.But with what I paid out for him during his first year alone with food, toys, bed, vet bills and his purchace price I could have bought myself a nice car.Don't you want a nice car someday?Or would you prefer to walk everywhere with your dog?

Do you take care of yourself? Do you cook, clean, do laundry, change the litter box and feed that cats? Do you pay for those veterinary bill? Maybe this has something to do with your Mom and Dads decision. They don't need more work or bills.

You can't convince them. No matter how much you say you will take care of the dog and everything, it is their money that will have to be used to take care of the dog. Just wait until you are old enough to get one yourself.
